Chapter 10 - The Shadow at the Gate|

Two weeks passed in blissful tranquility, and the dark shadow of the Bellini family seemed to have receded entirely.
Samuel was thriving; his grades improved, and he earned the starting pitcher position on the freshman baseball team.
Every evening, the kitchen was filled with laughter, the comforting smell of garlic and roasting meats, and lively conversation.
Luca came home every day at five o’clock sharp, refusing all evening meetings to help Samuel with his algebra homework.
I felt like a natural part of a real family for the first time in years, treated with immense dignity and warm respect.
However, peace in the city’s complex underworld is rarely permanent; it is merely the quiet space between lightning strikes.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Samuel’s baseball practice was abruptly called off due to a severe thunderstorm rolling across the lake.
I was waiting outside the athletic complex in the estate’s secondary vehicle when my phone rang frantically.
It was Luca’s private line.
“Hannah, don’t let Samuel leave the gymnasium!” Luca ordered, his voice raw with urgent adrenaline.
“Security cameras just picked up three unmarked vans approaching the school gates from the south avenue!”
Before I could even answer, a heavy black van jumped the concrete curb, blocking my car completely from behind.
Four masked men armed with heavy tactical batons and zip-ties leaped out of the side doors, rushing toward the gym entrance.
Samuel was standing under the glass awning with his duffel bag, looking around in utter confusion.
Without thinking of my own safety, I kicked open my driver-side door and sprinted across the rain-soaked asphalt toward the boy.
“Samuel, run inside! Lock the doors!” I screamed through the roaring thunder.
The men turned toward my voice, one of them lunging forward and grabbing my raincoat, throwing me roughly to the ground.
“Grab the kid! Leave the maid!” a gravelly voice ordered through a dark ski mask.
Samuel didn’t run away.
Seeing me fall, the fourteen-year-old dropped his gear, grabbed his brand-new maple baseball bat from the bag, and swung wildly.
The heavy wooden bat struck the lead kidnapper squarely across his kneecap with a sickening, hollow crack.
The man shrieked in agony, collapsing onto the wet pavement while clutching his broken leg.
“Don’t you touch her!” Samuel screamed bravely, raising the bat again with trembling, determined arms.
The other two men advanced furiously, pulling out zip-ties to overpower the brave boy.
Suddenly, the deafening roar of a high-performance engine ripped through the torrential rainstorm.
Luca’s heavy armored SUV slammed directly into the side of the kidnappers' van, crushing the metal like an empty soda can.
The force of the impact sent the remaining assailants flying across the slick asphalt into the bushes.
Luca kicked open his door before the SUV had even completely stopped rolling, stepping out into the driving rain.

He wasn't the loving, patient brother who helped with seventh-grade algebra anymore.
He was the undisputed king of Chicago, and someone had just dared to touch his family.
