Chapter 13 - Sanctuary in the Storm

|
Dr. Bianchi, the Rinaldi family's private physician, worked quickly and quietly in the mansion’s sterile medical suite.
My dislocated shoulder was popped back into place with a sickening thud that left me gasping for air.
Four tiny butterfly stitches were applied to the minor cut near my hairline, closing the wound neatly.
Mia refused to leave my side, sitting on the edge of the examination table, clutching my uninjured hand with both of hers.
“Does it hurt very bad, Miss Sarah?” she asked every two minutes, her little face pale with worry.
“Only a little bit now, sweetheart,” I lied softly, offering her a reassuring, tired smile.
“You were the bravest girl in the world today.”
“You were braver,” Mia whispered, leaning her head against my arm.
“You fought the giant monster with a red bottle.”
Dr. Bianchi taped a soft white bandage over my shoulder and administered a mild sedative to help with the pain.
“You need to rest for at least forty-eight hours, Miss Mitchell,” the elderly doctor advised gently.
“The bruising will be severe, but luckily there are no broken bones.”
Marco escorted us back up to Mia’s bedroom, stationing four heavily armed guards outside the door.
The entire mansion was locked down under maximum security protocols, steel blast shutters covering every window.
I lay in Mia’s oversized bed with her tucked safely against my chest, watching the digital wall clock tick toward eight o'clock.
Miles away in Manhattan, Dante was walking into the St. Regis ballroom to face the Five Families.
I knew the brutality of the world he commanded, and my stomach churned with terror that he might not return.
“Daddy will be okay, won't he?” Mia whispered into the darkness of the room.
I tightened my good arm around her, kissing the crown of her dark hair.
“Your father is the strongest man in this city, Mia.”
“Nothing in this world can stop him from coming back to you.”
Hours passed in agonizing silence as the sedatives fought against the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
Sometime after midnight, the faint, synchronized rumble of heavy vehicle engines echoed from the driveway below.
Tires crunched over gravel, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of car doors slamming shut.
Footsteps ascended the grand spiral staircase, moving with rapid, deliberate urgency down the hallway.
The bedroom door opened softly, silhouetting a tall, broad-shouldered figure in the amber light of the corridor.
Dante stepped into the room, his tie gone, his collar open, his dark coat dusted with the cold midnight air.
He paused at the foot of the bed, his dark eyes scanning the two of us under the covers.
Mia was fast asleep, her breathing deep and peaceful, her hand still resting over my heart.
Dante walked slowly to my side of the bed and sank onto the edge of the mattress.
The terrifying don who had walked out into the night looked utterly exhausted, but his eyes were filled with pure peace.
“Is it over?” I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room.
Dante reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping my uninjured cheek.
“It is completely over, Sarah,” he murmured, his thumb tracing my lower lip.
“Don Antonio stripped his own children of the family name when we presented the mercenary contracts.”
“Julian and Isabella have been exiled from the country forever under penalty of death.”
“The Romano empire has been liquidated and absorbed under Rinaldi control.”
I let out a long, ragged breath that felt like releasing years of accumulated fear.
Dante leaned down, resting his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my skin.
“When I saw you on that carousel floor, covering my daughter with your own body...”
His voice broke, thick with raw, unspeakable emotion.
“I realized that everything I built, every dollar, every territory, means nothing without you in this house.”
“Dante...” I breathed, my heart hammering against my bruised ribs.
“You gave my daughter a mother’s protection when she needed it most,” he whispered against my lips.
“And you gave a broken man a reason to believe in love again.”
He leaned in and gently, reverently pressed his lips to mine.
The kiss was soft, sweet, and filled with a fierce, possessive tenderness that made all the pain in my body vanish.
When he pulled back, his dark eyes were shining with an unshakeable promise.

“You are never leaving this family, Sarah Mitchell.”
“Neither of you will ever be alone again.”
