Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

|

Dante held his daughter for five full minutes while the girl’s silent tears soaked into his bespoke suit.

He rubbed her back with a gentle rhythm, whispering ancient Italian lullabies into her hair.

Isabella shifted uncomfortably against the doorframe, her expression hardening into stubborn defiance.

“Dante, we need to return downstairs before rumors start spreading among the capos.”

Dante slowly lifted his head from Mia’s shoulder, his eyes burning with an icy fire.

He laid Mia gently back against her pillows and pulled the soft quilt over her legs.

“Stay right here with Miss Sarah, sweetheart,” Dante said in a tone softer than velvet.

Mia looked at me, then looked back at her father with wide, cautious eyes.

“Will you come back, Daddy?”

“I will always come back to you,” Dante promised, kissing her forehead.

He stood up, towering over the room, and stepped out into the hallway.

He grabbed Isabella by the elbow, not violently, but with an iron grip that allowed no resistance.

He dragged her several paces down the corridor, far out of earshot from Mia’s open door.

I stepped into the hallway just far enough to keep an eye on them while watching Mia.

“Who forged my signature on that document, Isabella?” Dante asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“I didn't forge anything!” Isabella hissed, trying to wrench her arm free.

“My brother Julian handled the paperwork through your private office!”

“Julian?” Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits.

“Your brother had access to my private study on the third floor?”

Isabella realized her fatal slip of the tongue a second too late.

Her eyes darted sideways, searching for an excuse, but the lie had already collapsed.

“He only went in there to fetch the legal contracts for our wedding settlement!” she stammered.

“You left your seal and your fountain pen on your desk, Dante.”

“We were trying to help you!”

“Mia is a constant reminder of Elena, and Elena is dead!”

The slap was not physical, but Dante’s sudden stillness struck Isabella harder than any fist.

“Do not speak my wife’s name with your filthy tongue,” Dante whispered.

“Elena gave her life to protect this family, while you have spent nine months trying to tear it apart.”

“I am the daughter of Don Antonio Romano!” Isabella snarled, shedding all pretense of elegance.

“You cannot treat me like a common housemaid, Dante!”

“Our marriage unites the ports of New Jersey with the Manhattan terminals!”

“If you break this engagement over a whiny child, my father will call a commission meeting!”

“He will declare war on the Rinaldi syndicate before sunrise!”

Dante smiled, but there was no warmth in that smile—only the cold shadow of a predator.

“Tell your father to bring every soldier he has.”

“Because by tomorrow morning, the Romano name will not own a single warehouse on the Eastern Seaboard.”

He let go of her arm with disgust, as if discarding garbage.

He turned back toward Mia’s doorway and looked directly at me.

“Sarah.”

“Yes, Mr. Rinaldi?”

“Help Mia put on her dress shoes.”

“Then bring her down to the dining room.”

Isabella gasped in genuine horror.

“You wouldn't dare bring her down there now!”

“The entire city council is at that table!”

“Every boss from the five boroughs is watching us!”

Dante adjusted the cuffs of his black shirt and smoothed his lapels.

“That is precisely why she is coming down.”

“It is time everyone remembers who actually rules this house.”
