Chapter 15 - The Seat of Honor

|

One year later, the grand ballroom of the Rinaldi estate was illuminated by hundreds of floating crystal candles.

The heavy mahogany tables were adorned with fragrant white lilies, cascading eucalyptus, and shimmering crystal flutes.

Two hundred guests were gathered beneath the arched ceilings—business leaders, reformed associates, community figures, and true friends.

There was no tension in the air, no whispered threats, and no fear of sudden violence.

Tonight was not an arranged political alliance or a calculated mafia spectacle.

Tonight was our wedding celebration.

I stood beside the arched glass doors overlooking the gardens, wearing an off-the-shoulder gown of delicate ivory lace.

My hair was swept up in soft curls, secured by a vintage pearl comb that had belonged to Dante’s grandmother.

Chloe stood beside me as my maid of honor, looking stunning in a lavender silk dress, her eyes shining with proud tears.

“You did it, Sarah,” Chloe whispered, squeezing my hand with genuine sisterly love.

“You gave this family a real home, and you found the man you truly deserve.”

A gentle trumpet fanfare sounded across the ballroom, signaling the start of the formal reception.

Dante stepped through the double doors, looking impossibly handsome in a midnight-blue tuxedo tailored to perfection.

When his eyes found mine across the crowded room, the breath caught in his throat.

He walked toward me, his gaze never wavering, parting the sea of applauding guests like a king claiming his queen.

He reached out and took my hand, raising my knuckles to his lips for a slow, reverent kiss.

“You are the most breathtaking sight this world has ever produced, Mrs. Rinaldi,” he murmured against my skin.

“And you clean up quite nicely yourself, Mr. Rinaldi,” I teased with a radiant smile.

Dante laughed, wrapping his arm securely around my waist as the crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

He raised his champagne flute, signaling for silence across the cavernous, glittering room.

“One year ago, in this very house, I made a terrible mistake,” Dante’s voice rang out, strong, clear, and commanding.

“I allowed arrogance, blind ambition, and false allies to cloud what truly mattered.”

“I almost lost the two greatest treasures God ever placed in my path.”

He looked down at me, his eyes burning with unconditional, eternal devotion.

“My wife, Sarah, taught me that true power does not come from fear, weapons, or wealth.”

“True power comes from the courage to protect the innocent and the love that holds a family together.”

He extended his other hand toward the banquet doors.

“And now, please welcome the most important guest of the evening.”

The doors parted, and Mia stepped into the ballroom, looking like a fairytale princess in a pale yellow silk gown.

Around her neck was a delicate gold locket containing photos of Elena, Dante, and me.

She carried a small velvet pillow in her hands, walking gracefully down the center aisle toward the head table.

When she reached us, she did not place a wedding band on the table.

Instead, she carefully set down a framed glass plaque lined with solid gold trim.

Preserved inside the glass was a faded, slightly rumpled piece of folded cardboard.

The gold crayon letters were still as bright and clear as the night they had saved our lives.

DADDY'S SPECIAL GUEST.

Mia looked up at her father, then reached out and wrapped her small fingers tightly around mine.

“Mommy Sarah?” Mia whispered, her voice carrying sweet, melodious joy.

“Yes, my sweet girl?” I asked, kneeling down on the polished marble to embrace her.

“Is everyone sitting in the right place now?”

I looked up at Dante, whose strong hand rested securely on my bare shoulder, his wedding ring catching the candlelight.

I looked out at the room full of warmth, life, and genuine peace.

“Yes, Mia,” I replied, my voice thick with tears of absolute, complete happiness.

“Everyone is finally right where they belong.”
