Chapter 14 - The Final Settlement

|

The legal dissolution was signed in a quiet conference room on the following Friday.

There were no raised voices.

There were no dramatic arguments over art collections, summer estates, or private jets.

Laurel signed the final decree with a steady hand, sliding the pen back across the polished rosewood table.

Silas looked at the signature line.

Laurel Bennett.

She had taken back her maiden name.

The name Varelli had been stripped from her identity like an old coat thrown into a furnace.

"Your new firm is doing remarkable work," Silas said quietly, his voice cracked with emotion.

"The papers are calling you the most trustworthy auditor in the state."

"We do our best to protect people who can't protect themselves," Laurel replied with a polite smile.

"I gave five million dollars to Hope Harbor this morning," Silas confessed, hoping for a spark of acknowledgment in her eyes.

"Anonymously."

Laurel tilted her head slightly.

"Marcus flagged the donation an hour ago."

"We rejected the wire and returned the funds to your primary commercial account, Silas."

Silas felt the breath leave his lungs as if he had been punched.

"Why?"

"Hope Harbor doesn't accept conscience money," she said evenly.

"If you want to do good, Silas, do it without expecting absolution."

"Do it because it's right, not because you want me to look at you again."

Silas closed his eyes, fighting back the burning shame that threatened to overwhelm him.

"Will you ever forgive me?"

Laurel picked up her leather satchel and stood up from the table.

"I already have, Silas."

"Forgiving you was the only way I could set myself free."

"Now, you have to learn to live with what you chose."
