Chapter 6 - Ashes in the Snow

Silas stared at the binder, then at his cousin.

"Grant, what is she talking about?" Silas demanded, his voice dropping into the terrifying register that usually made men beg for their lives.

Grant scrambled to shove the papers back into the binder.

"She’s lying, Silas!"

"She’s bitter because of what happened last night with Sabrina!"

"She’s trying to destroy the family out of jealousy!"

Laurel stepped forward, resting both hands on the table, leaning directly into Grant's space.

"The transfer timestamps match your private IP address at your penthouse on 72nd Street, Grant."

"The encryption key was Silas's personal token, which you stole from his safe during the autumn gala."

"And the recipient bank?"

"It’s registered to an entity co-owned by you and Sabrina Cole."

Silas froze as if struck by lightning.

His eyes darted from Laurel's steady gaze to Grant's terrified face.

"Sabrina?" Silas whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue.

"Sabrina Cole was never an innocent girl in need of protection, Silas," Laurel said, her tone filled with cold pity.

"She was Grant's inside player."

"She stayed close to you to keep your attention away from the foundation’s books."

"She wore the thirty-thousand-dollar diamond bracelet to dinner because she wanted me to break."

"She needed me to leave the house so I wouldn't run the year-end reconciliation audit before midnight on the thirty-first."

Silas took a step toward Grant, his hands curling into fists so tight his knuckles turned bone-white.

"Is this true?" Silas roared, the glass windows rattling with the force of his voice.

Grant lunged out of his chair, backing toward the side exit.

"You gave everything to her, Silas!" Grant screamed, his facade completely collapsing.

"You treated the rest of us like dogs while you built your empire on her spreadsheets!"

May you like

"You deserved to lose it all!"

Security guards blocked the door before Grant could take another step.
