Chapter 15 - Queen of Her Own Empire

|

One year after the Christmas dinner that destroyed her marriage, Laurel Bennett stood on the balcony of her penthouse in Brooklyn.

Below her, the East River gleamed under the winter stars, reflecting the brilliant skyline of Manhattan.

Inside the warm, beautifully lit apartment, laughter and gentle jazz drifted through the French doors.

Her team from Hope Harbor was celebrating another year of triumph, having exposed three major corporate frauds and saved five charity funds from predatory takeovers.

Celeste Varelli sat by the stone fireplace, sipping eggnog and chatting happily with Marcus Vance.

Laurel leaned against the balcony railing, taking a sip from her glass of sparkling water.

She was thirty-nine years old, independent, wealthy through her own intellect, and bound to no man’s ego.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket with a delivery notification.

She opened it.

A courier had dropped a small package at the front desk of her building an hour earlier.

She walked inside, excused herself to her private study, and unwrapped the plain brown paper.

Inside was a small velvet box.

She opened it.

Resting against the black silk was her old gold wedding ring, accompanied by a single handwritten note on plain white paper:

I am selling the house on the Hudson tomorrow.

I am stepping down as CEO of Varelli Enterprises and handing the reins to an independent board.

I am going to work for an emergency relief organization in South America.

You were right about everything.

You were the gold, Laurel; I was just the stone that held it down.

May you always have the peace I never knew how to give you.

— Silas.

Laurel looked at the ring for a long, quiet moment.

She felt no sorrow.

She felt no anger.

She closed the box, walked over to her desk, and placed it inside a deep wooden drawer alongside the old receipts and memory books of a life that was now completely finished.

May you like

She closed the drawer with a firm, decisive click.

Then she turned, straightened her shoulders, and walked back into the warm light of her party, where the people who truly valued her were waiting with open arms.
