Chapter 11 - The Confession at Terminal Four

|
Warehouse Nine smelled of salt water and rust and old oil that never left the concrete floor.
I walked through the side door alone at midnight and heard the lock click behind me like a coffin closing.
Marie sat bound to a chair beside a metal table with rope at her wrists and ankles and a cloth gag between her teeth.
A dark bruise spread across her cheek and her eyes widened with relief and horror when she saw me.
She shook her head hard and tried to speak through the gag in a muffled sound that broke my heart.
I understood her without words because she was begging me not to sign anything for her sake.
I stopped ten feet away and forced my voice to carry for the wire hidden in my black bow.
I said Lorenzo Caruso had told me to come to Warehouse Nine at Terminal Four at midnight and I had come as demanded.
Lorenzo stepped out from behind a stack of shipping crates with a gun held loose in his right hand.
Rafael Orsini emerged from the office corridor with his gun drawn and stood behind Marie's chair.
Lorenzo told me the original USB would go into his pocket and my signature would go onto the protective proxy.
He told me Marie would walk out after both items were his and I would walk out only if I behaved.
I asked why a proxy mattered if he already had enough men and money to take whatever he wanted.
He seemed pleased by the question and I saw the vanity Agent Blake had warned me he could never resist.
He told me the Chen Trust controlled forty nine percent of Chen Logistics and the voting rights for Terminal Four.
He told me those rights passed to me on my twenty-fifth birthday in days unless a signed proxy named him alternate trustee first.
He told me my father Michael had built locks into the deed because Michael had finally suspected his oldest friend.
I asked why my father would suspect a friend who claimed to love our family so much.
Lorenzo set his gun within reach and folded his hands like a man settling in to tell a favorite story.
He told me Michael had found the weapons shipments moving through Terminal Four under the number S nineteen.
He told me Michael had recorded meetings and copied a shipping ledger and hidden proof where Lorenzo could not burn it.
I made myself breathe slowly and asked what he had done when he learned about my father's plan.
He told me he had ordered Rafe to cut the brake lines on Michael's car before the drive across Harbor Bridge.
He told me the crash had to look clean because a murdered partner would bring questions a grieving accident never would.
Marie made a choked sound behind her gag and tears ran down into the bruise on her cheek.
He told me he had forged the separation documents after the funeral because Alessandro had refused to abandon me on his own.
He told me one forged set sent me away believing my husband wanted me gone and another kept Alessandro searching in the wrong places.
He told me Alessandro had never signed a true annulment and our marriage had lived on paper all these years.
I asked why he had worked so hard to keep me poor if I was already gone from the Caruso estate.
He told me poverty was a cage with no locks for a girl who had to pay rent and fear every knock at the door.
He told me he had fed Marie's gambling debt through his collectors and turned eighteen thousand dollars into eighty seven thousand dollars on paper.
He told me every inflated bill kept Marie obedient and kept me working and moving and too exhausted to ask about my trust.
He told me a desperate heiress who believed she was unwanted would sign anything when the right day finally came.
I asked about the morning at the bakery when glass rained over me and a bullet struck the car beside Alessandro.
He frowned and glanced at Rafe with an irritation that looked genuine.
He told me the bakery shooting was meant as a warning to Alessandro that I had been found at last.
He told me Rafe had aimed to frighten us and the shot went too far because fear makes young men careless.
He said his men had swept this warehouse for police radios and found nothing because he was not a careless man.
He did not know his sweep had missed the thin wire woven into the bow in my hair.
He picked up his gun again and the friendly storytelling left his face all at once.
He pushed the folder across the table and ordered me to place the original USB beside the proxy.
I set the tissue wrapped drive on the cold metal and he snatched it up like a jewel he had chased for six years.
He did not know Blake already held a verified copy of Michael's video and the shipping ledger.
He opened the folder and tapped the signature line with the barrel of his gun.
He told me to sign now at gunpoint or Marie would not live to see me hesitate again.
I picked up the pen and thought of Whitaker warning me that only one exact name could bind the trust.
I wrote the name Sophia Chen Caruso in full across the line and pushed the folder back toward him.
He stared at the signature without seeing the trap because his triumph had arrived too fast for caution.
I stepped toward Marie and demanded that he untie her first before anyone left the warehouse.
I told him a hostage still bound made his promise worthless and even his own men knew the meaning of an exchange.
Lorenzo gave Rafe a short annoyed nod and Rafe holstered his gun to work at the ropes with a small knife.
Marie's right wrist loosened by a single inch while Lorenzo lifted the proxy and read my name a second time.
He asked why I had written Caruso at the end like a bride showing off a new title.
I told him Alessandro had given me my ring that night and I had walked in as his wife by my own choice.
Rafe stopped cutting the rope and his attention shifted suddenly to the bow in my hair.
He told Lorenzo they had planted a tracker on me before and found it in my coat where a frightened girl would hide it.
He told Lorenzo a bakery bow was the kind of pretty thing a federal technician would choose for a wire.
Rafe reached for my hair and his fingers brushed the black bow above my left ear.
He felt the woven wire beneath the knot and his face changed with triumph and rage in the same instant.
He tore at the bow and Lorenzo raised his gun at my chest and called me a lying traitor.

Rafe pulled his gun free and raised it toward my face while Marie screamed behind her loosened gag.
I heard a shot ring out across Warehouse Nine and I knew at once the sound had not come from Rafe's gun.
