Chapter 2 - The Whispered Promise

|
The chandelier above the long mahogany table seemed to hum in the suffocating silence.
Not a single fork moved against porcelain.
Vanessa Bellini stood frozen like a marble statue in her crimson silk gown.
Luca Moretti did not blink.
His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on his five-year-old nephew.
"What did she make your father promise, Oliver?" Luca asked in a voice so quiet it sent shivers through the room.
Oliver gripped the small silver watch even tighter against his sweater.
"She told Daddy that if he ever came back to Chicago, men with guns would visit our apartment."
A collective gasp rippled through the seated guests.
"She said Mommy and I would disappear in the river, just like trash," Oliver continued, his small chin quivering.
I felt my knees buckle, and I caught myself against the edge of the sideboard.
For three agonizing years, I had cried myself to sleep thinking Matteo had simply stopped loving us.
I had believed he walked out the door into the rain because our poverty was too heavy for him to bear.
The truth struck my chest like a lead weight.
He hadn't run away.
He had been hunted away to keep us alive.
Luca slowly rose from his crouch.
He stood at his full height of six feet two inches, the shadow of his tailored jacket swallowing Vanessa whole.
"Is that what happened, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice deathly calm.
"Luca, he's a child!" Vanessa shrieked, backing toward the double doors. "You're listening to the wild imagination of a maid's dirty brat!"
Luca's hand slammed down on the table with enough force to shatter a crystal water glass.
Water and shattered shards flew across the white linen.
"Do not speak about my brother's blood that way ever again," Luca growled.
Two armed guards stationed at the dining room doors immediately stepped into the room, crossing their arms over their chests.
The twenty-four wealthy guests scrambled to their feet, desperate to escape the sudden volcanic fury of the Moretti boss.
"Dinner is over," Luca announced without looking at any of them. "Everyone out."
The guests practically tripped over each other in their hurry to reach the foyer.
Vanessa tried to slip among them, but Luca's right-hand enforcer, a hulking man named Marco, stepped squarely into her path.
"Not you, Miss Bellini," Marco said coldly.
Vanessa turned back toward Luca, tears of rage welling in her eyes.
"My father will destroy you for this, Luca!" she screamed. "The Bellini family won't tolerate being humiliated in front of our allies!"
"Your father can come try," Luca replied, never raising his voice above a deadly whisper. "Marco, escort Miss Bellini to the private sitting room in the cellar."
"Luca, no!" Vanessa shrieked as Marco gripped her slender arm.
"You're not leaving this house until I know every word you said to my brother," Luca added.
As her screams faded down the marble corridor, the grand dining hall fell into an eerie, ringing quiet.
I stood there in my cheap maid's uniform, my apron stained with table polish, holding Oliver against my hip.
Luca turned around slowly and looked at us.
The terrifying mafia kingpin who ran half the Midwest suddenly looked like a broken boy who had lost his way.
"Claire," he whispered.
I pressed Oliver's face into my neck, terrified of what this world would do to my innocent son.
"Please don't hurt him, Mr. Moretti," I begged, my tears finally spilling over. "He's all I have left."
Luca walked toward us, his heavy boots making no sound on the Persian rug.
He stopped two feet away and slowly dropped to one knee on the floor.
"I spent seven years searching every morgue and back alley in America for Matteo," Luca said, his rough voice cracking. "And you kept his son safe right under my nose."
He looked up into my eyes with genuine reverence.

"You are not a maid in this house anymore, Claire."
"From this second forward, you and Oliver are Morettis."
