Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Silver

|
Luca stood in the middle of the cold cellar room, staring down at the woman he had intended to marry next month.
His silence was far more terrifying than any shout or physical blow.
Marco shifted in the corner, his hand resting instinctively near the holster under his arm.
"Lock the door, Marco," Luca ordered quietly.
"Luca! What are you doing?!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling up from the metal chair.
"You're staying down here until Dr. Evans returns with the DNA results," Luca said, turning his back on her.
"You can't treat me like a criminal!" she shrieked, banging her fists against the reinforced steel door as Marco pulled it shut.
"You threatened my family, Vanessa," Luca muttered through the iron viewing slot. "In this house, that makes you worse than an enemy."
Luca climbed the stone steps back up into the quiet mansion.
The grandfather clock in the main hall chimed three in the morning.
He walked into his private study and sat behind his heavy desk.
On the polished wood lay the old silver watch Oliver had given him.
Luca picked it up, feeling the cold weight of the metal in his scarred palm.
Matteo had worn this watch every day from his eighteenth birthday until the day he vanished.
Luca remembered the night they had argued seven years ago—the night Matteo walked out on their father's empire.
“There is no honor in this blood, Luca,” Matteo had shouted in this very room.
“We are poisoning everything we touch, and I won't let our father turn me into a monster.”
Luca had been too young and too angry to understand back then.
He had called Matteo a weakling and a traitor.
He had spent seven years believing his brother hated him.
Luca turned the watch over beneath the bright desk lamp.
He noticed something he hadn't seen in the chaotic dining room earlier.
The scratch across the crystal wasn't an accidental gouge from a fall.
It was deliberately carved at a precise angle, pointing straight toward the number eight on the dial.
Luca's heart began to race.
When they were boys hiding from their father's strict discipline, Matteo had created a secret code.
Whenever Matteo wanted to hide a message in their treehouse, he would scratch an arrow pointing to a number that corresponded to a hidden compartment.
Luca reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a fine jeweler's screwdriver.
He wedged the thin blade beneath the back casing of the watch.
With a soft, metallic click, the outer silver plate popped open.
Beneath the ticking movement lay a second, razor-thin inner lid.
Luca held his breath as he carefully pried the second lid open.
Tucked inside the hollow space was a tightly folded square of waterproof drafting paper.
Luca's hands shook violently as he unfolded the tiny paper.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
It was Matteo's precise, elegant script.
Luca, the note began.
If you are reading this, Vanessa has found me, and I am already gone.
She came to my home tonight with photos of Claire and my infant son, Oliver.
She told me that if I did not vanish off the face of the earth, Salvatore Bellini would slaughter them both before sunrise.
I cannot fight their army alone without dragging Claire into our family's nightmare.
I am leaving to draw their hunters away from Chicago.
Everything you need to crush the Bellini family is stored in a private safe-deposit box at the Lakefront Union Bank.
Account number: 817-Moretti.
The key is hidden inside Oliver's favorite stuffed bear, Barnaby.
Protect my boy, Luca.
He has your fire and my heart.
Forgive me for leaving you.
Your brother always, Matteo.
Tears streamed down Luca's face, falling silently onto the faded ink.
His brother had never abandoned them.

Matteo had sacrificed his freedom, his identity, and his happiness to save his wife and baby.
And he had trusted Luca to finish the fight.
