Chapter 15 - The Head of the Table

|
One year later, the Moretti estate was filled with the sweet scent of blooming white roses and warm summer air.
The scars of that violent night had long since been repaired.
The grand dining hall had been completely remodeled, stripped of its cold, intimidating atmosphere and replaced with warm oak paneling, bright chandeliers, and framed family photographs.
Vanessa Bellini was serving a ten-year sentence in a federal correctional facility for extortion and conspiracy.
The remnants of the Bellini syndicate had been dismantled and absorbed peacefully, bringing an unprecedented era of calm and prosperity to the city.
The Moretti family businesses had been transitioned entirely into legitimate shipping logistics, real estate development, and charitable foundations, honoring Matteo's lifelong dream of walking in the light.
Tonight was a special celebration—Oliver's sixth birthday.
A magnificent three-tiered chocolate cake sat on a sideboard, covered in colorful candles.
Twenty close friends, trusted colleagues, and extended family members filled the dining room with laughter and clinking glasses.
Matteo stood at the head of the long table, dressed in a sharp navy suit, looking healthy, strong, and completely at peace.
His arm was wrapped securely around my waist as I stood beside him in an emerald green silk dress.
I was no longer the frightened, exhausted mother counting pennies for rent.
I was a proud, respected wife and partner, running the Moretti Children's Foundation that provided scholarships to struggling single mothers across Chicago.
Luca walked into the room carrying a large wrapped gift box, a broad smile lighting up his handsome, tattooed face.
"Happy birthday, big guy!" Luca cheered, ruffling Oliver's dark curls.
Oliver, dressed in a neat little blazer and tie, beamed with excitement.
"Thanks, Uncle Luca!" Oliver said, giving his uncle a high five.
Matteo raised his crystal glass, signaling for the room to quiet down.
The guests immediately silenced their conversations, turning their smiling faces toward my husband.
"Seven years ago, I walked out of this house because I believed our family was broken beyond repair," Matteo spoke, his deep voice filled with gratitude and emotion.
"I spent years living in the shadows, believing that love was a weakness that would get the people I cared about killed."
Matteo looked down at me, his dark eyes brimming with unconditional devotion.
"Claire taught me that love isn't a weakness—it's the only thing worth fighting for."
"And my brother Luca proved that loyalty to family can conquer any darkness on earth."
Matteo turned his gaze toward our six-year-old son, who stood proudly near the table.
"A year ago, a cruel woman told my son that this table was not for a maid's little boy," Matteo said, his voice ringing with pride.
"She said he didn't belong in this chair."
Matteo walked over to the grand, hand-carved mahogany armchair at the very head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the supreme patriarch of the Moretti dynasty.
Matteo pulled the chair out and looked down at his son.
"Oliver Matteo Moretti," his father said with a warm smile.
"This seat has always belonged to you."
Oliver looked at his father, then at his mother, and finally at his Uncle Luca.
Luca winked at him and nodded in encouragement.
Oliver climbed up into the massive armchair, sitting tall with his little hands resting on the polished armrests.
Around his small wrist was a brand-new leather watch strap, fitted perfectly to hold the old silver watch with the initials M. A. M.
The entire room erupted into joyous cheers and applause.
Luca raised his glass high toward his nephew.
"To Oliver!" Luca shouted with genuine happiness. "The heart and future of the Moretti family!"
"To Oliver!" the entire room echoed in unison.
As the laughter and music filled the grand mansion, I looked around the table at my complete, unbreakable family.
We had survived the threats, the lies, and the violence of the past.
We had built a new legacy out of love, courage, and forgiveness.

My little boy was no longer hiding in the shadows of someone else's world.
He was sitting exactly where he belonged—safe, cherished, and surrounded by the family that would protect him forever.
