Chapter 14 - The Return of the King

|

The smoke cleared slowly under the emergency backup lights.

Standing at the top of the grand staircase was a tall, broad-shouldered man dressed in a dark traveling overcoat.

His left arm hung slightly stiff at his side, and a pale scar ran along his jawline.

His dark hair was cut short, peppered with flecks of gray at the temples.

His chest rose and fell with ragged breaths as he lowered the smoking weapon.

Luca froze in the center of the foyer, his gun slipping from his fingers and clattering onto the marble floor.

"Matteo?" Luca whispered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief.

The man on the stairs took one step down, then another.

"I told you seven years ago, little brother," Matteo said, a faint, familiar smirk touching his lips. "You always were too slow on the draw."

Luca let out an uncharacteristic, choked sob and bolted up the marble staircase.

The two brothers collided on the landing, wrapping their arms around each other in a fierce, bone-crushing embrace.

Luca buried his face in his older brother's shoulder, weeping openly for the first time in his adult life.

"You're alive," Luca cried, gripping Matteo's coat. "You son of a gun, you're really alive."

"I heard about the Commission meeting this afternoon through our family contacts," Matteo explained, his voice thick with tears.

"I knew Salvatore would do something insane and desperate tonight."

"I chartered a private flight from Milan four hours ago."

"I wasn't going to let anyone hurt you again, Luca."

Down in the hallway, the panic room door unlocked with a hydraulic release.

Marco, holding a field bandage to his wounded arm, opened the heavy door for us.

"It's over, Claire," Marco said with a warm, exhausted smile. "Go upstairs."

I picked up Oliver, my heart pounding so fast I could barely breathe.

I walked out of the corridor and stepped into the grand foyer.

When I looked up at the landing, the world stopped spinning.

Matteo was standing there, looking down at us.

Our eyes met across the ruined, smoke-filled hall.

"Claire," he whispered, his voice trembling with an agonizing, beautiful tenderness.

"Matteo!" I cried out, my voice breaking.

Matteo hurried down the remaining stairs, taking them two at a time despite his stiff shoulder.

He reached the bottom and fell straight to his knees on the marble floor before us.

I set Oliver down on his feet.

Oliver stared at the tall man with the scarred jaw, his eyes wide with recognition.

Matteo reached out his trembling hands, tears streaming freely down his weathered cheeks.

"Oliver," Matteo whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "My brave, beautiful boy."

Oliver took one slow step forward, looking down at the man's face.

Then he pulled the small silver watch from his pocket and held it out with both hands.

"Daddy," Oliver said softly, a brilliant smile breaking across his sweet face. "I kept it safe for you, just like you asked."

Matteo threw his arms around our son, pulling him into his chest and burying his face in Oliver's neck, weeping with uncontrollable joy.

"You kept it safe, buddy," Matteo sobbed. "You saved us all."

I knelt down beside them, wrapping my arms around my husband and my son.

Matteo pulled me tightly against his heart, pressing desperate, loving kisses to my forehead, my cheeks, and my lips.

"Forgive me, Claire," he whispered against my skin. "I will spend every second of the rest of my life making this up to you."

"You're home, Matt," I wept, resting my forehead against his. "That's all that matters in the world."

Luca stood at the bottom of the stairs, watching our reunion with a look of profound peace in his dark eyes.

The nightmare was finally over.
