Chapter 13 - The Eleventh Hour|

The delivery room was a blur of bright overhead surgical lights, beeping monitors, and frantic medical commands.
The trauma of the siege and the terrifying ambush had pushed Nelia’s body past its physical limits.
Dr. Bennett, who had arrived ahead of the ambulance, stood at the foot of the bed with a grim expression on his face.
“Her blood pressure is dangerously high, Diego,” Dr. Bennett warned quietly as Diego took his place beside the pillow.
“The umbilical cord is compressed. We need to deliver this baby right now, or we risk losing them both.”
Nelia was barely conscious, her skin as white as the hospital sheets and her lips parted in shallow, exhausted breaths.
She looked up at Diego with half-lidded eyes full of overwhelming sorrow.
“Diego...” she whispered, her voice barely a thread of sound.
“If something happens to me... promise me you will protect our child.”
“Promise me you will give him a good, peaceful life.”
Diego felt a hot tear escape his eye, rolling down his chiseled cheek to drip onto her pale hand.
“Don't you dare talk like that, Nelia,” he choked out, his voice breaking with unbearable emotion.
“You are not dying tonight.”
“I survived seven months without you in a living hell, and I will not survive another day if you leave me now.”
He leaned down, pressing his lips against her burning forehead with desperate reverence.
“Fight, Nelia,” he begged, dropping to his knees beside the bed, uncaring of the doctors moving around him.
“Fight for me. Fight for our baby.”
“I need you, Nelia. You are the only soul I have left in this dark world.”
The fetal monitor suddenly let out a high-pitched, continuous beep as the baby’s heart rate plummeted.
“She needs to push right now!” Dr. Bennett yelled, his calm demeanor shattering under the immense pressure.
“Nelia, listen to my voice!” Diego commanded, gripping both of her hands and pulling her forward with his strength.
“Give me everything you have left!”
Nelia found a hidden reservoir of maternal strength buried deep beneath her exhaustion.
She let out a raw, agonizing scream that echoed down the hospital corridors.
She bore down with every ounce of life remaining in her frail body.
The beeping monitors screamed their chaotic alarms.
The nurses moved in rapid, coordinated motions around the sterile field.
Nelia gave one final, desperate push before her head fell back onto the pillows, her eyes rolling back into darkness.
For two agonizing seconds, the delivery room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.
Diego stopped breathing completely, his hand freezing over Nelia’s still chest.
Then, a sharp, indignant wail shattered the silence of the room.
The loud, healthy cry of a newborn baby echoed off the sterile tile walls.
Dr. Bennett lifted the tiny, squirming infant into the light, a wide, triumphant smile spreading across his weary face.
