Chapter 12 - HEALING THE FRACTURED SOUL

|

Luca entered the private library and tapped the security code into the vault keypad with trembling, eager fingers.

The heavy steel door swung open, revealing Sophia sleeping peacefully on the sofa, her head resting gently on my lap.

I looked up as the morning light spilled into the concrete room, offering Luca a tired but deeply relieved smile.

"Is it over?" I whispered softly, careful not to disturb the sleeping child.

"It is over, Claire," Luca answered, stepping inside and kneeling beside us on the soft carpet.

"Julian Russo and Vanessa are in federal custody, and their organization has been completely dismantled."

"No one will ever threaten Sophia again."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense adrenaline of the past twelve hours finally leaving my weary body.

Luca gently lifted Sophia into his arms, carrying her out of the fortified vault and back into the main wing of the house.

Cleaning crews and restoration teams were already busy sweeping away debris and boarding up shattered windows downstairs.

Luca carried his daughter into the master living room, where the fireplace had been rekindled with sweet-smelling cedar wood.

He sat down on the large velvet sofa, keeping Sophia cradled against his chest as she slowly opened her eyes.

"Daddy?" she murmured, rubbing her sleepy eyes with the back of her small hand.

"I'm here, princess. Daddy is right here," Luca whispered, kissing her forehead over and over again.

Sophia looked around the warm room, noticing that the large, ornate oil portrait of Vanessa had been removed from the mantelpiece.

In its place sat a beautifully restored silver frame holding a photograph of a smiling, dark-haired woman with gentle green eyes.

It was Elena, Sophia's mother.

Sophia gasped, her little hands flying to her mouth as tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled her eyes.

"Mommy's picture..." she whispered, her voice trembling with wonder.

"Vanessa didn't destroy it, Sophia," Luca said softly, his voice thick with unashamed emotion.

"Claire found it hidden in the bottom of the trash bin last night and carefully cleaned the glass for you."

Sophia turned her head toward me, her tear-stained face glowing with an angelic smile that melted my heart completely.

She wriggled out of Luca's arms, ignoring the bandages on her feet, and threw herself into my embrace.

"Thank you, Claire! Thank you for saving Mommy's picture!" she cried, burying her face into my neck.

I held her tightly, rocking her back and forth as tears of profound happiness spilled down my cheeks.

"You never have to hide your love for your mother ever again, Sophia," I whispered, kissing her soft hair.

"She will always watch over you, and so will we."

Luca stood beside us, looking down at his daughter and me with a warmth in his dark eyes that transformed his entire face.

For the first time since I had entered the Moretti mansion, the ruthless mob boss looked completely at peace.

He placed a gentle, protective hand on my shoulder, his touch sending a pleasant, reassuring shiver down my spine.

"We are going to rebuild this home together, Claire," Luca promised softly.

"A real home, filled with love, laughter, and light."
