Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW AT THE GATES

|

Upstairs on the second floor, the storm seemed to grow more violent with every passing hour.

Wind rattled the tall glass panes of Sophia's bedroom, casting long, dancing shadows across the painted walls.

Sophia had woken up from her restless slumber, clutching a worn teddy bear tightly against her chest.

I sat on the edge of the mattress, reading aloud from her favorite fairy tale book to keep her mind at peace.

"Claire, will the bad lady come back upstairs?" she asked, her big green eyes filled with lingering dread.

"No, my darling," I answered softly, closing the book and kissing her temple.

"Your father handled everything. Vanessa will never step foot inside this house again."

"And Daddy won't let the man with the snake car take me?"

"Your daddy is the strongest man in this entire city, Sophia. He would tear down the world before letting anyone hurt you."

Sophia smiled faintly, leaning her head against my arm as the comforting warmth of the room embraced us.

Suddenly, without any warning, every light in the bedroom and the hallway outside flickered and died.

Complete, pitch-black darkness swallowed the entire estate.

A second later, the mansion's emergency backup generator hummed to life, casting an eerie amber glow through the corridor.

Then came the sharp, unmistakable sound of automatic gunfire crackling in the distance near the front gates.

Sophia let out a piercing scream, wrapping her small arms around my waist in sheer terror.

"Claire! What's that noise?!"

"Stay calm, sweetheart, stay right behind me," I urged, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

The private bedroom phone on the nightstand rang with an urgent, shrill beep.

I picked it up immediately. "Hello?!"

"Claire! It's Luca!" His commanding voice cut through the static on the line.

"Julian Russo breached the outer security perimeter with two armored assault SUVs."

"They cut the main power lines at the street transformer."

"I am sending Marco to Sophia's room right now to escort you both to the reinforced panic vault."

"Do not open that door for anyone except Marco or me! Do you understand?!"

"I understand, Mr. Moretti! Please be careful!"

Before he could reply, the deafening roar of an explosion shook the entire foundation of the house.

The crystal chandelier above Sophia's bed swung violently, showering small fragments of glass onto the Persian rug.

I dropped the receiver, grabbed Sophia in my arms despite her bandaged feet, and bolted toward the heavy bedroom door.

Outside in the hallway, smoke was already beginning to drift through the recessed ceiling vents.

Down below in the grand foyer, the shatter of heavy wood and the thunderous exchange of assault rifles signaled a full-scale war.

Julian Russo had not come to negotiate or make demands.

He had come to slaughter the entire Moretti bloodline while the household was trapped inside.

"Hold onto me as tight as you can, Sophia," I whispered, tightening my grip around her trembling frame.

"I promised your daddy I would protect you, and I am not going to break that promise."
