Chapter 13 - A NEW DAWN IN CHICAGO

|

Three months passed, and the bitter Chicago winter slowly surrendered to the vibrant blooms of a golden spring.

The scars of that terrifying night had been completely erased from the Moretti estate through tireless renovations.

New bulletproof glass windows sparkled in the morning sunshine, and the grand gardens outside burst with colorful tulips and roses.

Sophia's feet had healed perfectly, leaving only faint, silvery lines that she called her "badges of bravery."

Her laughter, once silenced by fear and cruelty, now echoed freely through the vast corridors of the mansion every single afternoon.

She spent hours in the sunny kitchen with me, learning how to roll homemade pasta dough and bake chocolate chip cookies.

Luca had fundamentally changed his daily routine, refusing to let business consume his entire life any longer.

He returned home every day by four o'clock, sitting on the patio to help Sophia with her fifth-grade mathematics homework.

One bright Saturday afternoon, while Sophia was engrossed in painting watercolors in the sunroom, Luca invited me into his private study.

The room had been completely redecorated, stripped of its formerly dark and intimidating atmosphere.

Warm sunlight streamed through the French doors that opened directly onto the lush, green lawn.

"Please, sit down, Claire," Luca said with a warm, welcoming smile, gesturing toward a plush armchair opposite his desk.

I sat down, smoothing the fabric of my simple summer dress, still feeling a fluttering sensation in my chest whenever he looked at me.

"How is Sophia doing with her new school counselor?" he asked, leaning back against the edge of his mahogany desk.

"Dr. Henderson says she is making incredible progress, Luca," I replied happily.

"She sleeps through the night without any nightmares, and she made three new best friends in her art class."

Luca smiled, a deep, genuine smile that brought out the handsome lines around his striking dark eyes.

"That is entirely because of you, Claire."

"You gave her the safety and emotional security she was denied for so long."

"I was merely doing what my heart told me was right," I said modestly, looking down at my hands.

Luca walked around the desk, stopping directly in front of my chair, his presence commanding yet remarkably gentle.

"For three years after Elena died, this house was a tomb," he confessed, his voice low and rich with raw honesty.

"I lived in cold darkness, convinced that my only purpose was to build an empire of fear to keep Sophia safe from rivals."

"I brought Vanessa into this house out of political convenience, nearly destroying the only person I truly loved."

"Then you walked through those front doors carrying my daughter in your arms through the pouring rain."

He reached down, taking both of my hands into his warm, calloused palms, gently pulling me up to stand before him.

My breath caught in my throat as I looked up into his intense, affectionate gaze.

"You didn't just save Sophia's life that day, Claire," Luca whispered, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand.

"You saved my soul from eternal darkness."
