Chapter 12 - THE CHRISTMAS PROMISE

|
Christmas Eve arrived in Chicago under a blanket of pristine white snow.
The Moretti estate looked like an illustration from a vintage holiday postcard.
Twinkling golden fairy lights wrapped around the ancient oak trees in the circular driveway.
Wreaths of fresh pine and holly hung from every exterior lamppost and balcony balustrade.
Inside the grand hall, a twenty-foot balsam fir tree reached toward the ceiling, adorned with thousands of crystal ornaments and silver ribbons.
My mother sat near the fireplace in the great room, looking radiant in a dark green velvet dress.
Her doctors had officially discharged her from Northwestern three days ago, confirming that her lung capacity had stabilized completely.
She was laughing heartily as Mrs. Carter brought her a plate of warm Italian butter cookies and espresso.
Down on the floor by the tree, Ellie was shaking a brightly wrapped box with wide, expectant eyes.
She wore a festive red plaid dress and white patent-leather shoes, her laughter ringing like small silver bells.
“Mommy, can I open just one present before dinner?” Ellie begged, looking up at me with an adorable pout.
I smiled from the sofa, shaking my head gently.
“You know the rule, young lady.”
“Dinner first, then presents.”
“Aw, man!” she giggled, setting the box down and running over to hug her grandmother’s knees.
Luca walked into the great room from the terrace, dusting snowflakes from the shoulders of his charcoal sweater.
He looked relaxed, his face completely free from the grim shadows of the underworld.
He had officially transferred all syndicate operations into a blind trust managed by Don Falcone, stepping down completely to focus on legitimate shipping and real estate development.
He walked over to the sofa, sitting beside me and taking my hand into his warm grasp.
“Everything is ready in the dining room,” Luca said, smiling at me.
“No cold roast beef tonight?” I teased softly, recalling the disaster of that first dinner eleven months ago.
Luca chuckled, a deep, joyful sound that warmed my entire soul.
“Tonight, we have roasted goose, handmade gnocchi, and a chocolate mousse cake that Mrs. Carter guarded with her life.”
Ellie’s head snapped up at the mention of chocolate cake.
“Is it pink frosting, Mr. Luca?”
Luca smiled down at her with infinite warmth.
“White chocolate frosting, sweetheart.”
“And nobody has to clean a single crumb.”
We walked together into the grand dining room, which had been bathed in the soft glow of fifty beeswax candles.
The table was set with pristine Irish linen, polished silver, and crystal flutes filled with sparkling cider.
We sat together as a true family—Luca, my mother, Ellie, and me.
We ate, we laughed, and we shared stories until the candles had burned down halfway.
When the dessert plates were cleared, Luca stood up from the head of the table.
The room quieted as he looked around at each of us with deep, quiet emotion.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, flat legal envelope, placing it in front of Ellie.
“This is your first Christmas present, Ellie,” Luca said gently.
Ellie looked at the envelope curiously, then at me.
“Can I open it, Mommy?”
I nodded, feeling a strange, wonderful tightness in my throat.
Ellie carefully broke the seal and pulled out an official document bearing the gold seal of the State of Illinois.
She looked at the complex legal words, confused.
“What does it mean, Mr. Luca?”
Luca walked around the table, kneeling beside her chair just as he had done on the floor of this room months ago.
“It means, Ellie, that as of two o'clock this afternoon, a federal judge signed the final decree.”
“Your legal name is now Eleanor Reed Moretti.”
Ellie gasped, her hazel eyes going wide as saucers.
“I’m a Moretti?”
“You are my daughter,” Luca whispered, his voice thick with tears.
“Legally, officially, and forever.”
Ellie let out a squeal of pure, unbridled joy and threw her arms around Luca’s neck, hugging him with all her little might.
Luca closed his eyes, holding her tightly against his heart as my mother wept softly into her linen napkin.
Then, Luca slowly stood up.
He turned his gaze toward me, his hands reaching into his breast pocket once more.
He pulled out a small black velvet box.
My heart stopped beating entirely.
Luca walked over to where I sat, and without a single word of hesitation, he lowered himself onto one knee on the marble floor.
He opened the box, revealing a flawless five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, flanked by two trillion-cut sapphires that caught the candlelight like stars.
“Madison,” Luca said, his deep voice carrying clearly to every corner of the vast room.
“Eleven months ago, you walked into this room with an apron and a heart full of courage.”
“You showed me what family truly meant.”
“You gave my life a purpose, and you gave my soul a home.”
May you like
He looked up into my eyes, completely vulnerable, completely mine.
“Will you marry me, Madison, and be the queen of my heart forever?”
