Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW AT THE GATE

|

The grandfather clock in the long corridor struck three in the morning.

The mansion had fallen into an uneasy, armed silence.

I sat curled on the velvet sofa in the blue suite, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw blanket Luca had brought me.

Through the half-open door, I could hear Ellie’s rhythmic, peaceful breathing.

Every light in the courtyard below was blazing, illuminating the high stone perimeter walls in sharp halogen white.

I couldn't sleep.

The adrenaline still coursed through my veins, mixed with the surreal knowledge that my mother was safe in Northwestern Hospital.

The door of the suite opened with a barely audible click.

Luca stepped into the room, having changed out of his formal suit into a black crewneck sweater and dark trousers.

A heavy tactical holster was strapped under his left arm, holding a modified Beretta.

“You’re still awake,” he said softly, walking over to the fireplace.

“I couldn't close my eyes,” I admitted.

“Every time I hear the wind against the terrace, I think of Vanessa’s father.”

Luca pulled a wooden armchair opposite the sofa and sat down, leaning his elbows on his knees.

“Salvatore Bellini has already mobilized,” Luca said, his tone flat and calculated.

“Three of his scouting vehicles were spotted circling the highway exit half an hour ago.”

My heart seized with immediate panic.

“Are they coming here?”

“They won't get within half a mile of these gates,” Luca said with absolute confidence.

“I have forty loyal soldiers stationed across the grounds.”

“And the city police commissioner knows that if a single bullet hits this estate, his private offshore accounts will be frozen by morning.”

He leaned back, studying my face in the dying embers of the hearth.

“Tell me about Ellie’s father,” he said suddenly.

The question took me by surprise.

I looked down at my hands, twisting the hem of the blanket.

“His name was Derek Cole,” I said quietly.

“We met in college before my mother got sick.”

“He was charming, handsome, and completely hollow inside.”

“When I found out I was pregnant, he asked me to get rid of the baby so we could move to California.”

I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat.

“I told him no.”

“He packed his car the next morning, took the four thousand dollars we had saved for tuition, and never returned.”

Luca’s jaw set like iron.

“A thief and a coward.”

“I worked two retail jobs while eight months pregnant,” I continued, the memories stinging like salt on an old wound.

“When Ellie was born, I looked at her face and swore that I would never let anyone make her feel like an inconvenience.”

I met Luca’s gaze, my voice steadying with fierce conviction.

“That was why I couldn't stay quiet tonight.”

“When Vanessa made her kneel... when she tried to strip away my baby’s dignity to entertain her wealthy friends...”

“I would have died on that marble floor before I let her put Ellie back down.”

Luca didn't speak for a long moment.

He simply looked at me, his dark eyes burning with something far deeper than admiration.

“My mother died when I was nine years old,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper.

“She was poisoned by a rival family who wanted my father’s seat at the Commission.”

I gasped softly, my hand flying to my mouth.

“I’m so sorry, Luca.”

“I spent my childhood watching my father wage wars of vengeance,” Luca said, staring into the red embers.

“He built an empire of concrete and blood, but there was never any warmth in this house.”

He looked back at me, his gaze piercing through my soul.

“Tonight, when I walked into that dining room and saw you shielding Ellie with your body, I saw what a true family looks like.”

He reached across the space between us, taking my trembling hand into his.

His palm was warm, rough with scars, and utterly protective.

“You gave this cold fortress a heartbeat tonight, Madison.”

Before I could answer, a sharp, double buzz vibrated against Luca’s tactical vest.

He pulled out his radio, clicking the side button.

“Report.”

Marco’s urgent voice crackled through the small speaker:

“Boss, we have an intercept on the north service line.”

“A delivery van just attempted to bypass the checkpoint using forged Moretti security badges.”

Luca was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his lethality returning instantly.

“Who was driving?”

“Two Bellini enforcers,” Marco replied.

“And boss... they had a child’s restraint harness in the back of the van.”
