Chapter 14 - THE VOWS IN THE GARDEN

|

The garden terrace was filled with three hundred guests beneath the clear blue April sky.

There were city officials, medical directors, former staff members, and trusted friends who had supported our new life.

At the front of the rose-covered arbor stood Luca Moretti.

He looked impossibly striking in a bespoke black tuxedo, a single white gardenia pinned to his lapel.

His hands were folded loosely in front of him, his posture tall and commanding, but his eyes were fixed on the terrace doors with breathless anticipation.

The string quartet transitioned smoothly into the swelling, romantic chords of Pachelbel’s Canon.

The entire congregation rose to their feet in unison.

Ellie walked down the stone pathway with graceful poise, scattering pink petals with every step, smiling at the guests like a true little princess.

Then, I stepped through the arched doorway on the arm of my mother.

A collective gasp of admiration rippled through the garden.

As my eyes locked with Luca’s across the sea of white roses, the entire world seemed to fade into complete silence.

I saw the tears glisten in his dark eyes—a sight no one in the underworld would have ever believed possible for Luca Moretti.

He watched me walk toward him as if I were the only living soul on the face of the earth.

My mother placed my hand into Luca’s large, warm palm, smiling up at him with complete trust.

“Take care of my girl, Luca,” she whispered.

“With my life, Evelyn,” Luca answered solemnly.

He led me up the three stone steps of the arbor, turning to face me completely.

His hands held mine with an unyielding, protective grip that chased away every lingering shadow of my past.

Father Thomas, the elderly priest from our neighborhood parish, smiled warmly at both of us.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God to unite this man and this woman in holy matrimony.”

When the time came for the vows, Luca did not read from a prepared card.

He looked directly into my eyes, his deep voice carrying clearly over the gentle whisper of the garden breeze.

“Madison,” Luca began, his voice thick with raw, unvarnished emotion.

“A year ago, I was a man who ruled an empire of stone, surrounded by enemies and bound by blood.”

“I believed that power was the only thing that kept a man safe.”

He gently lifted my hands, pressing a soft kiss to my knuckles.

“Then you walked into my life, holding your daughter’s hand, carrying the courage of an army in your quiet heart.”

“You taught me that true strength is not measured by the fear you command, but by the love you protect.”

“I vow to be your shield against the storm, your partner in every trial, and your shelter for all my days.”

“I give you my name, my fortune, and my heart, without reservation, forever.”

Tears flowed freely down my cheeks as I looked up at the man who had redeemed my world.

“Luca,” I whispered, my voice steadying with complete conviction.

“I spent my life feeling invisible, believing that my only purpose was to carry burdens in silence.”

“You didn't just see me, Luca; you saw my child, and you honored our dignity when the world tried to crush it.”

“You gave my mother life, you gave my daughter a father, and you gave me a love that I never thought I was worthy to receive.”

“I vow to stand beside you in light and in darkness, to laugh with you in peace, and to love you with every beat of my heart until my last breath.”

Father Thomas smiled, raising his hands in blessing over our joined fingers.

“By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

“Luca, you may kiss your bride.”

Luca didn't wait.

He wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me slightly off the stone floor as his lips captured mine in a deep, magnificent kiss.

The garden erupted into thunderous, joyous applause that echoed toward the sky.

Ellie rushed forward, wrapping her arms around both of our legs, laughing with pure, radiant joy.

Luca lowered me down, scooped Ellie up into his right arm, and held my hand tightly with his left.

Together, the three of us turned to face the cheering crowd as the bells of the estate chapel began to peal across Lake Michigan.
