Chapter 12 - THE CASSETTE TAPE

|

Two hours past midnight, a fierce blizzard began howling against the tall leaded glass windows of the estate.

Snow piled high against the stone balustrades, burying the city of Chicago beneath a thick shroud of white.

In the warmth of the master study, a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting long amber shadows across the book-lined walls.

Olivia sat in a deep leather armchair wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket, holding a warm cup of herbal tea.

Luca paced back and forth across the Persian rug, his face drawn tight with unbearable anticipation.

I stood near the door, keeping a fresh pot of coffee ready on a silver tray.

The heavy wooden doors of the study opened, and Matteo stepped inside, brushing heavy snow from his wool overcoat.

In his gloved hands, Matteo carried a tarnished brass lockbox encrusted with decades of cemetery dust.

He walked across the room and placed the box reverently upon the mahogany desk.

Alongside the box, Matteo laid an antique portable cassette player he had retrieved from Silvio's personal vault.

Luca approached the desk with hesitant, reverent steps, his hands trembling slightly as he opened the brass latch.

Inside lay an old magnetic cassette tape labeled in faded blue ink: For My Beloved Children, Luca and Olivia.

Luca looked over at his sister, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"Are you ready to hear her, Olivia?" Luca whispered softly.

Olivia pressed her hands against her mouth, nodding through a fresh wave of tears.

Luca carefully inserted the tape into the player and pressed the black play button.

A sharp mechanical click echoed through the quiet study, followed by the faint, rhythmic hissing of magnetic tape.

Then, a soft, melodic voice filled the room, carrying a warmth that instantly cut through eighteen years of grief.

"My sweet Luca, my precious Olivia," Donna Isabella's voice resonated, sounding as clear as if she were standing beside the fire.

"If you are listening to this recording, it means I was unable to protect you from the vipers inside our own home."

Olivia let out a ragged sob, pulling the cashmere blanket tighter around her shivering shoulders.

"Silvio has discovered that I intend to take the family evidence to federal prosecutors on Christmas morning," Isabella continued, her voice steady and courageous.

"He believes I am betraying the family, but I am doing this to save your souls from this endless cycle of blood."

"He and Carmine Russo have made a pact to divide the Chicago ports between them."

"Arthur Vance came to me in tears an hour ago, confessing that Silvio offered him money to tamper with my car."

"I am driving to the federal courthouse tonight, but if an accident befalls me on Lake Shore Drive, do not look to outside enemies."

"Look to the man who smiles at our dinner table, the man who calls himself your uncle."

"Luca, protect your sister."

"Olivia, forgive your brother, for he knows not the darkness that surrounds him."

"I love you both more than life itself, and my spirit will remain with you until we meet again in paradise."

The tape ended with a sharp, hollow click, returning the room to the lonesome sound of the howling wind outside.

Luca sank into the chair behind the desk, resting his face in his open hands as silent tears soaked his sleeves.

Olivia stood up, walked around the desk, and wrapped her arms tightly around her brother's trembling shoulders.
