Chapter 4 - THE HEIRLOOM ON HER NECK

|

Vanessa instinctively clutched the heavy diamond-encrusted pendant resting against her collarbone.

Her knuckles turned stark white as she pressed the ornament firmly against her chest.

"No," Vanessa whispered, taking another desperate step back toward the wall.

"This was a gift from my grandmother, Luca."

"You gave me your word you would never invade my personal family memories."

Luca didn't shout, but his presence seemed to expand until it filled every corner of the vast room.

He snapped his fingers once, a sharp sound like dry wood snapping in the cold.

His top enforcer, Matteo, stepped instantly out of the shadows near the entrance.

Matteo was six feet four inches of solid muscle and ruthless loyalty, his face completely expressionless.

"Hold her hands," Luca instructed quietly.

"Luca, don't you dare touch me!" Vanessa screamed as Matteo closed the distance in two broad strides.

Before she could claw at him, Matteo seized both of Vanessa’s wrists in an unbreakable iron grip.

The banquet guests sat frozen in horrified awe, nobody daring to intervene on behalf of the lady of the house.

Luca walked toward his wife with deliberate, unhurried steps.

He reached out with a single gloved hand and grasped the delicate platinum chain around Vanessa's neck.

With one sharp, effortless flick of his wrist, the chain snapped cleanly.

The sound of breaking metal echoed across the silent room like a gunshot.

Vanessa sobbed, closing her eyes as Luca opened his palm to inspect the heavy pendant.

Using his thumb, Luca pressed firmly against the hidden latch on the back of the diamond casing.

The decorative front sprang open on a miniature hinge.

Tucked snugly inside the hollowed compartment was a heavy platinum signet ring.

The crest carved into the worn metal was unmistakable: two crossed vipers beneath a jagged crown.

It was the legendary crest of the Russo syndicate.

Luca’s hand began to shake with a rage so profound that the veins on his neck bulged against his collar.

"My mother wore this ring on her pinky finger every single day of her life," Luca murmured.

"It was taken from her hand when she made peace with Carmine Russo a week before her death."

"When her body was pulled from the burning wreckage, the ring was gone."

"The police told us the impact threw it into the lake."

Luca looked up, his eyes burning with an ancient, murderous fury.

"Arthur Vance didn't keep it, did he?"

"You bought it back from the pawn shop after Arthur panicked."

"And you kept it as a trophy around your neck inside my own house."

Vanessa slumped against Matteo’s grip, her legs completely giving out beneath her heavy velvet skirt.

"I didn't kill her, Luca!" Vanessa wept, her tears smearing heavy mascara across her cheeks.

"I was only eighteen years old back then!"

"I only did what my father ordered me to do!"

"You lied to me for three years of marriage," Luca hissed, his face inches from hers.

"You slept in my bed while wearing the spoils of my mother’s murder."

From the far end of the long dining table, an older gentleman in an immaculate grey suit slowly cleared his throat.

It was Silvio Moretti, Luca’s seventy-year-old uncle and the family’s longtime consigliere.

"Now, Luca, my boy, let us not be hasty in front of our distinguished guests," Silvio spoke smoothly.

"A family matter of this magnitude should be handled behind closed doors, with level heads."

I watched Silvio’s hands closely from my spot by the serving cart.

Beneath the white linen tablecloth, the old consigliere's fingers were trembling uncontrollably.
