Chapter 6 - THE HIDDEN VAULT

|

I hurried out of the dining room with my legs feeling as heavy as lead.

Behind me followed two of Luca’s most formidable personal guards, their heavy footsteps echoing against the marble corridor.

We ascended the sweeping grand staircase leading up to the master bedroom wing.

The mansion was suffocatingly quiet outside the banquet hall, draped in garland and twinkling Christmas lights.

We pushed open the double doors of the master suite, where the sweet scent of Vanessa's expensive French perfume lingered heavily.

I walked straight toward the massive antique vanity table carved from dark cherry wood.

The mirrors reflected my pale, terrified face as I knelt upon the plush carpet.

"Where is it, miss?" one of the guards asked, his voice low and urgent.

"Behind the jewelry drawer," I replied, my hands trembling as I reached beneath the bottom molding.

I found the small brass release lever Vanessa had fumbled with three nights ago.

With a firm click, a hidden panel popped open beneath the carved baseboard.

Inside lay a thick leather-bound folder tied with black ribbon, alongside a modern encrypted burner phone.

Tucked beside the phone was a stack of unopened postal letters addressed to Luca Moretti in Olivia’s neat cursive.

They were postmarked over the last several months, each stamped with red wax seals that had been torn open and resealed with clear tape.

"God have mercy," the guard muttered under his breath, recognizing the undeniable evidence.

I pulled the heavy leather binder from the cavity, feeling the cold weight of a family's buried secrets.

We hurried back down the grand staircase without wasting a single second.

When we re-entered the dining hall, the tension was so thick it felt difficult to draw breath.

Luca was standing in the center of the room, his jacket unbuttoned, waiting like an executioner at the gallows.

I approached him respectfully and placed the leather binder, the phone, and the letters directly into his hands.

"This was hidden beneath the vanity baseboard, Mr. Moretti," I said softly.

Luca looked at the unopened letters written in his sister’s familiar handwriting.

His fingers stroked the paper as if touching an impossible relic from a long-lost past.

He slowly opened the leather binder, revealing rows of financial ledgers and offshore banking routing numbers.

Every deposit was dated over the past eighteen years, transferring vast sums from a holding firm in Grand Cayman.

Luca traced the signature on the authorization documents.

The deposits were authorized by an account registered to Russo Enterprises.

But the recipient account belonged to a domestic shell company based in downtown Chicago.

Luca's eyes narrowed to lethal slits as he read the name of the domestic account holder.

He didn't look at Vanessa this time.

Instead, his gaze slowly lifted, traveling past his sobbing wife and locking squarely upon Silvio Moretti.

"Uncle," Luca spoke, his voice dropping into a chilling register that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

"Why has Carmine Russo’s estate been depositing two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into your personal blind trust every Christmas for eighteen years?"
