Chapter 8 - THE STANDOFF

|

The banquet hall erupted into absolute chaos as guests shrieked and scrambled beneath the mahogany tables.

Several capos reached for their weapons, but Silvio cocked the hammer back with a sickening, definitive click.

"Drop your hands, all of you!" Silvio shouted, his wild eyes darting frantically across the room.

"I have three men waiting in the courtyard with automatic rifles!"

"If I don't walk out of these iron gates alive in five minutes, they will burn this mansion to the ground!"

Luca did not draw a weapon; he simply stepped directly into the path of Silvio's gun barrel, shielding Olivia with his own body.

"Your men outside aren't answering your signal, Uncle," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Silvio hesitated, his finger trembling slightly against the trigger.

"What did you say?" Silvio rasped, sweat beading heavily along his receding hairline.

"Do you honestly think I didn't notice the strange cars parked near the southern gatehouse an hour ago?" Luca asked softly.

"Before I sat down to carve the Christmas turkey, Matteo and his squad disarmed your mercenaries in the snow."

"Their rifles are currently locked in my armory, and their bodies are bound in the back of my refrigeration trucks."

Silvio’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated terror.

He realized, with sudden clarity, that he was entirely alone inside the fortress of the man he had betrayed.

"You're bluffing," Silvio spat, his voice cracking with rising hysteria.

"I will blow a hole straight through your heart, Luca!"

"I raised you after your father died!"

"I made you the king of this city!"

"You didn't make me anything," Luca responded, taking a slow, steady step toward the barrel of the gun.

"You stole my family, and you made me an orphan surrounded by ghosts."

Olivia reached out from behind her brother, clutching the fabric of his tuxedo jacket in sheer terror.

"Luca, please don't," Olivia begged.

"I just got you back, don't let him kill you!"

Silvio tightened his grip, his eyes wild with the frenzy of a cornered beast.

"Step back, nephew, or I swear on our father’s grave I will pull this trigger!"

I looked around frantically, my hands resting on the heavy silver wine cooler resting on my serving trolley.

The silver bucket was filled with twenty pounds of crushed ice and two heavy bottles of chilled champagne.

Nobody was paying attention to the humble maid standing frozen against the ornate wood paneling.

Silvio was breathing in ragged, shallow gasps, his entire focus locked onto Luca’s advancing chest.

I gathered every ounce of courage in my body, lifted the ice-filled silver bucket, and swung it with all my might.

The heavy silver basin struck Silvio directly across the side of his temple with a sickening, dull thud.

The revolver discharged with a deafening roar, sending a bullet tearing harmlessly into the plaster ceiling.

Plaster dust rained down upon the crystal chandelier like a shower of artificial snow.

Silvio stumbled sideways, groaning in agony as his weapon clattered loudly across the polished marble floor.

Before the old traitor could recover his footing, Luca moved with the speed of an attacking panther.

Luca drove his fist straight into Silvio’s jaw, knocking the older man flat onto his back beneath the grand Christmas tree.
