Chapter 13 - Secrets of the Heart

Later that evening, after the crowds had departed and the catering tents were packed away, a peaceful quiet settled over the estate.
The construction pavilion overlooked the wide, grassy clearing where the hospital foundation stones were already being laid.
A light evening mist drifted through the ancient oak trees, carrying the sweet fragrance of blooming lilacs and damp spring earth.
Luca and I walked slowly along the stone path that wound around the estate’s historic glass conservatory.
Inside the restored greenhouse, exotic orchids, night-blooming jasmine, and lush green ferns flourished under soft golden fairy lights.
Luca had insisted on walking me back to the guest villa on the property where Aunt June and I were staying for the weekend.
Neither of us had spoken for several minutes, but the silence between us was comfortable, warm, and deeply charged with unspoken emotions.
“Rosa told me an interesting story over lunch today,” I said, breaking the quiet with a gentle, teasing smile.
Luca arched an eyebrow, looking down at me with curious amusement.
“Oh, really?” he asked.
“What dangerous family secret did she confess this time?”
“She told me that three days before the engagement party, you tried to break off the wedding with Vivienne,” I said softly.
Luca paused in his stride, stopping beneath an archway covered in climbing white roses.
His playful expression softened into something vulnerable and sincere.
“She told you the truth,” Luca admitted quietly, looking out into the fragrant gardens.
“I never loved Vivienne, Elena.”
“The engagement was an arrangement urged by the older trustees who claimed it would bring peace and stability between our families.”
“Every instinct in my gut screamed that something was wrong, that her affections were hollow and performative.”
“When I tried to end it, Julian threatened to pull his foundation investments from the children’s charities.”
“I stayed in it to protect the funding, thinking I could manage the situation from within.”
He turned to face me fully, stepping closer until I could feel the rhythmic warmth of his breathing in the cool night air.
“And then, seven weeks before the banquet, you walked through the front doors of the estate.”
My breath caught in my throat as I looked up into his intense, searching gaze.
“I remember the first afternoon you sat with Rosa in the conservatory,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with raw emotion.
“You didn't bow your head or walk on eggshells like the other staff members who were terrified of my family's reputation.”
“You laughed with her.”
“You read her poetry, you listened to her stories about Italy, and you scolded me for walking across her clean floor with muddy boots.”
A soft laugh escaped my lips, but my heart was hammering furiously against my chest.
“You were tracking mud everywhere, Luca,” I murmured playfully, though my eyes remained locked on his.
“For ten years, my life was filled with people who either wanted something from me or were terrified of what I might do to them,” Luca continued, reaching out to gently cup my cheek in his warm palm.
“You were the first person who saw me as an ordinary man who simply loved his grandmother.”
“That night in the ballroom, when you dropped to your knees to protect Rosa, I didn't see an employee.”
“I saw the bravest, most extraordinary woman I had ever met.”
Tears of genuine tenderness welled in my eyes as his thumb gently stroked across my cheekbone.
“Luca...” I whispered, leaning into his touch without thinking.
“I was terrified that night, but not of Vivienne or the guns.”
“I was terrified of losing the warmth and family I had finally found with you and Rosa.”
“You will never lose us, Elena,” Luca vowed, his voice fierce, steady, and filled with an undeniable promise.
“Not as long as I have breath left in my body.”
He leaned down slowly, giving me every opportunity to step away.
I didn't move an inch; I rose slightly on my tiptoes, meeting him halfway as his lips met mine beneath the canopy of white roses.
The kiss was gentle at first, hesitant and reverent, before deepening into a powerful, breathtaking embrace that made the entire world fade into insignificance.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead resting gently against mine, we were both breathing heavily, our hearts beating in perfect, synchronized harmony.
From the far end of the garden path, the distinct sound of a cane tapping against stone made us spring apart with flushed cheeks.
Rosa was standing by the conservatory entrance with a mischievous, triumphant grin plastered across her face.
“I told June you two would take forever to figure it out!” Rosa called out merrily into the night.
“Now come inside before you catch a cold, you ridiculous children!”
Luca laughed, wrapping his arm firmly around my waist and pulling me close against his side.

“Some things never change, Elena,” he whispered with a radiant grin.
“And I wouldn't have it any other way,” I replied, leaning my head against his shoulder as we walked toward the light.
