Chapter 6 - Into the Inferno

|

The heat began to radiate through the thick stone ceiling within sixty seconds.

Thick, oily black smoke poured down the spiral staircase like an invading river of venom.

I pulled the collar of my dress over my nose and mouth, coughing as the caustic fumes burned the lining of my lungs.

“Luca, we can't go back up that way!” I cried out over the growing roar of flames above.

“The entrance is completely engulfed!”

Luca’s face was grim in the sweeping beam of the flashlight, but there was not a trace of panic in his calculating eyes.

He pulled off his heavy wool tuxedo jacket and wrapped it securely around my head and shoulders.

“Breathe through the wool, Elena,” he commanded, his voice slicing through the crackle of fire.

“This bunker was designed by men who anticipated being surrounded by enemies with dynamite.”

“There is always an exit.”

He sprinted to the far corner of the subterranean room where three towering vintage wine racks stood against the rough foundation wall.

Luca grabbed the sturdy oak uprights of the middle rack and braced his boots against the floor.

With a guttural roar of sheer physical effort, he hauled the massive wooden shelving unit outward.

Behind the rack lay a low, arched drainage tunnel lined with historic red brick, barely four feet high.

“Where does that lead?” I asked between ragged, wheezing coughs as the air grew thinner by the second.

“It feeds into the old municipal storm runoff culvert near the river embankment half a mile west,” Luca answered.

He knelt down and pushed me gently toward the entrance of the dark, damp conduit.

“Crawl through first, Elena.”

“Keep your head down and move as fast as your hands can carry you.”

“I am right behind you.”

I dropped to my knees on the cold, wet concrete, the rough stones tearing through the fabric of my dress and scraping my skin.

The tunnel was pitch-black, freezing, and slick with decades of accumulated moss and rainwater.

Behind me, Luca squeezed his tall, muscular frame into the narrow opening, holding the flashlight forward to light my path.

Above us, a deafening explosion rattled the foundation stones, sending showers of dust and mortar crashing onto our backs.

The main library had just collapsed into the firestorm.

If we had delayed by even thirty seconds, we would have been incinerated in the blast.

Adrenaline surged through my veins, pushing through the burning pain in my knees and bleeding palms.

I crawled relentlessly forward, ignoring the foul stench of stagnant drain water soaking through my clothes.

After what felt like an eternity of suffocating darkness, a fresh draft of crisp, rainy night air hit my face.

Up ahead, the brick tunnel opened onto a rusted iron storm grate overlooking a steep, muddy riverbank.

I reached the iron bars and pushed with all my remaining strength, but the corroded hinges refused to budge.

“It’s rusted shut!” I cried out, my voice cracking with exhaustion.

Luca reached past my shoulder, planting his heavy combat boot against the center of the iron grate.

With two violent, bone-jarring kicks, he snapped the brittle rusted bolts.

The iron grate tumbled into the dark mud below with a dull splash.

Luca helped me scramble out of the opening and caught me in his arms as we slid down the slippery embankment into the tall reeds.

Rain lashed against our faces, washing the black soot from our cheeks and clearing our burning lungs.

Behind us, through the dense screen of bare autumn trees, the Oak Brook estate burned like a towering funeral pyre against the midnight sky.

Flames leaped fifty feet into the air, consuming the historic mansion in an apocalyptic blaze.

“Rosa...” I gasped, horror gripping my heart as I stared at the towering inferno.

“Did they reach Rosa?”

Luca’s phone buzzed violently inside his waterproof utility pocket.

He pulled it out, answered with a single tap, and put it on speakerphone against the drumming rain.

“Boss!” Marco’s strained voice shouted over the sound of screaming sirens and tactical gunfire.

“We saw the breach at the north gate before the explosive charges detonated!”

“My strike team evacuated Mrs. Moretti through the underground garage in the secondary armored Suburban!”

“She is completely unharmed, Luca!”

“We are en route to the downtown high-rise safehouse right now!”

Luca let out a long, ragged breath of pure relief, closing his eyes for a single moment against the pelting storm.

“Good work, Marco,” Luca said, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal cadence once more.

“Elena and I made it through the culvert.”

“We have the blue file in our possession.”

“Did you identify the men who set the charges?”

There was a brief pause on the line, punctuated by the sharp click of Marco reloading a magazine.

“It wasn't just Julian’s street thugs, Luca,” Marco replied grimly.

“Vivienne Vale was in the lead surveillance car outside the gates.”

“She broke her ankle monitor and cut a deal with her father’s cartel associates.”

“They are liquidating every family asset tonight before boarding a private jet to Zurich at dawn.”

Luca looked down at the waterproof blue file tucked tightly beneath his arm, his eyes gleaming like polished obsidian.

“They aren't getting on that plane,” Luca said softly.

“Tell the downtown team to lock down the city center.”

“Tonight, the Vale dynasty ends for good.”
