Chapter 7 - The Lion’s Den

The penthouse suite atop the Moretti Tower in downtown Chicago was an impenetrable glass-and-steel fortress.
From the sixty-fifth floor, the city spread out below like an endless carpet of glittering gold and crimson lights.
Rosa sat resting comfortably in an oversized leather recliner near the panoramic windows, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket.
Her color had returned, and her breathing was remarkably steady thanks to the diligent care of the private medical staff.
When Luca and I walked into the penthouse suite, soaked in rain, covered in soot, and bleeding from our hands, Rosa let out a soft cry.
“Luca! Elena!” she exclaimed, holding out both arms toward us.
Luca crossed the room quickly, dropping to one knee beside her chair and wrapping his arms around her frail shoulders.
“We are alright, Nonna,” he murmured gently, kissing her weathered cheek.
“We have Miriam’s file.”
“Everything Anthony died protecting is right here.”
Rosa took my hands into hers, inspecting my bruised knuckles and dirt-stained face with tearful tenderness.
“You risked your life for my family twice in one night, child,” Rosa whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
“God brought you into this household for a reason.”
“I couldn't let them destroy the truth, Mrs. Moretti,” I said softly, kneeling beside Luca on the plush carpet.
Marco walked into the suite, followed by two men in dark gray suits carrying heavy laptops and digital evidence binders.
“Boss, this is Special Agent Marcus Vance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Marco announced.
“And yes—he is Miriam Vance’s nephew.”
A tall, broad-shouldered man with keen gray eyes stepped forward, extending a firm hand to Luca.
“My aunt has been in hiding for twenty years waiting for this night, Mr. Moretti,” Agent Vance said seriously.
“Julian Vale has used bribery, extortion, and local political corruption to shield himself from federal indictments for two decades.”
“If that blue file contains the original unredacted shipping manifests and the foreign bank routing numbers, we can freeze his global assets within the hour.”
Luca placed the blue accordion folder onto the large glass coffee table.
Agent Vance sat down immediately, opening the file and scanning the yellowed pages with practiced, analytical speed.
His eyes widened as he compared the handwritten routing codes with the live financial database glowing on his laptop screen.
“This is extraordinary,” Agent Vance breathed, tapping his keyboard furiously.
“Julian Vale just initiated an emergency wire transfer of two hundred and eighty million dollars from the clinic's legacy charity trust to a dummy corporation in the Cayman Islands.”
“He is currently hosting a high-society charity banquet at the Grand Palmer House ballroom to maintain his public cover while the funds clear.”
“Vivienne is with him right now, surrounded by private security and city council members.”
“Once the wire completes at six o'clock this morning, their private Gulfstream will depart from Midway Airport for non-extradition territory.”
“How long do we have before the transfer becomes irreversible?” Luca asked, his jaw set like iron.
“Less than two hours,” Agent Vance replied grimly.
“The local police won't touch the Palmer House without a signed warrant from a district judge, and Julian has two judges sitting at his VIP table right now.”
Luca stood up straight, towering over the room with an aura of absolute, terrifying authority.
“Then we don't wait for a warrant,” Luca said calmly.
“We take the truth directly to the room where Julian feels most invincible.”
Rosa looked up at her grandson, a fierce, triumphant glint in her wise hazel eyes.
“Take me with you, Luca,” Rosa demanded, gripping the armrests of her chair.
“Nonna, you are not well enough for this,” Luca said, his voice laced with protective concern.
“I have spent twenty years being treated like a fragile, grieving widow who didn't understand what happened to her son,” Rosa replied firmly, her voice ringing clear across the penthouse.
“I sat at Vivienne's engagement table while she stole my breath away.”
“I will stand in that ballroom and watch them put the handcuffs on her wrists myself.”
Luca looked at his grandmother for a long, silent moment, seeing the unbreakable fire burning within her soul.
Then he looked at me, a question hanging silently in his dark eyes.
“I’m coming too,” I said without a single second of hesitation.
“Vivienne tried to brand me as a criminal on the news tonight.”
“I want to be there when the whole city sees who she really is.”
A rare, stunning smile curved Luca’s lips, dangerous and mesmerizing all at once.

“Marco, prepare the formal convoy and have the stylists bring fresh clothes,” Luca commanded.
“Tonight, Chicago is going to learn what happens when you strike a Moretti.”
