Chapter 15 - The Vow of Tomorrow

The tears spilled over my eyelashes, warm and joyful, running down my cheeks as I looked down at the man kneeling before me.
Behind him, Rosa was dabbing her eyes with an embroidered lace handkerchief, smiling through her own tears of profound happiness.
From the second-floor terrace overlooking the courtyard, I could see Aunt June, Miriam, and Marco leaning against the railing, watching us with radiant smiles.
There was no hesitation in my mind, no shadow of fear, and not a single lingering doubt about the man Luca Moretti had become.
“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion before speaking louder so the whole courtyard could hear.
“Yes! A thousand times, yes!”
A triumphant, breathless laugh escaped Luca’s lips as he stood up and slid the heirloom ring onto my finger.
It fit perfectly, gleaming with timeless elegance against my skin like a beacon of enduring love and justice.
Luca wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me completely off my feet and spinning me around the flagstone courtyard.
I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, laughing with pure, unadulterated happiness as the autumn leaves swirled around us in the crisp breeze.
When he set me down, his hands cradled my face, and he kissed me with a passionate, boundless intensity that took what little breath I had left away.
From the stone bench, Rosa stood up and walked over to us, placing her hands over our joined palms.
“Finally,” Rosa sighed with dramatic, theatrical relief, making us both laugh through our tears.
“Now I can officially order the wedding dress designers without having to pretend I’m buying tablecloths.”
“You knew about this, Mrs. Moretti?” I asked playfully, wiping a tear from my cheek.
“Of course I knew, Elena,” Rosa replied, pulling me into a fierce, loving embrace.
“I told Luca on the night of the fire that if he didn't marry you, I was going to leave the entire family estate to you in my will anyway!”
Luca laughed, wrapping his arm around both of our shoulders and holding us close against his chest.
“You hear that, Elena?” Luca murmured into my hair, his voice vibrating with absolute contentment.
“Nonna made it very clear that you are the real boss of this family.”
A few minutes later, the bronze bells of the new children’s hospital began to chime across the afternoon sky, signaling the start of the public dedication ceremony.
We walked through the courtyard doors and into the grand atrium together, hand in hand.
Over five hundred people had gathered in the sunlit hall: doctors in white coats, nurses, smiling recovered patients, civic leaders, and members of the press.
When the crowd saw Luca and me enter with Rosa walking proudly beside us, a thunderous, standing ovation erupted throughout the building.
The applause was deafening, filled with genuine respect, celebration, and love for the family that had overcome darkness to bring light to their city.
Luca stepped up to the podium, holding the microphone in one hand while his other hand remained firmly intertwined with mine.
He looked out across the cheering crowd, then turned his gaze down to meet my eyes with an expression of eternal devotion.
“Thirty years ago, this city lost two beautiful souls who believed in protecting the innocent,” Luca spoke into the microphone, his voice carrying across the silent, reverent room.
“Today, Anthony and Maria’s dream is finally alive.”
“Not because of power, wealth, or corporate influence.”
“It is alive because one remarkable woman refused to look away when darkness knocked at our door.”
“To Elena, to my Nonna Rosa, and to everyone who stood with us in the fight for the truth: this hospital belongs to you.”
The room erupted once more into roaring cheers and tears of celebration.
I looked at the sparkling diamond on my hand, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had traded an empire of shadows for a future built on honor, love, and light.

The locked handbag, the stolen medicine, and the long, terrifying night that began with an old woman gasping for breath had finally reached its end.
Standing beside Luca, surrounded by the family we had fought so fiercely to save, I knew our real story was only just beginning.
