Chapter 24 - The Serpent’s Ledger

The safehouse in the hills overlooking Lake Garda was quiet as dawn broke over the snow-capped Alps.

Norah sat at a heavy oak table, cleaning the dust and grime from the Doge’s ruby ring. Sebastian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sunrise with an unlit cigar between his fingers. On the screen of a secured laptop behind them, financial profiles and corporate ownership trees scrolled by in glowing green text.

"Cyrus Kane," Norah said, breaking the silence. "I remember that name. When I was twelve years old, he came to my father's workshop in Antwerp. He brought three locked briefcases. My father locked me in the back room and told me that if Cyrus Kane ever spoke to me, I was to run to the nearest police station."

"Kane was my father’s ghost broker," Sebastian said, turning around. "He laundered the Romano family’s offshore revenues through Swiss holding companies and private art vaults. When I took over and started legitimizing the business, I audited Kane. I thought I stripped him of all authority and severed his contracts."

"You cut him off from the legal empire," Norah deduced, looking up from the gem. "Which means you took away his cash cow."

"And left him with the illegal debts Vittorio racked up before dying," Sebastian confirmed. "Kane doesn't want revenge. He wants liquidity. He’s using my father’s old rivals and your father’s stolen codes to force a hostile takeover of Romano Holdings."

"How does an auction in Milan help him do that?"

Sebastian walked over, placing his palms on the table. "The syndicate elite operate under an ancient code called the *Tavola d'Oro*—The Golden Table. It’s an underground council where bloodlines settle territorial disputes through high-stakes bidding instead of street wars. If Kane presents proof that Romano Holdings has structural vulnerabilities and unbacked debts, the council will authorize a forced liquidation."

"And Kane takes control of the entire syndicate network," Norah realized. "Using my father's stolen ledger as the evidence."

"Exactly." Sebastian leaned down, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering certainty. "Tomorrow night, the council meets in an abandoned cathedral outside Milan. It’s invitation-only. The minimum buy-in is fifty million euros in uncut stones or bearer bonds."

Norah smiled slowly, a brilliant, predatory expression that made Sebastian's pulse race. She held up the Doge’s ring, catching the morning light.

"We don't need fifty million in bearer bonds, Sebastian," she said softly. "We have the Ring of the Doge. And inside this ruby is something Cyrus Kane doesn't know my father hid."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow. "What did your father do to it?"

"My father was the greatest micro-lapidary of the century," Norah said, her fingers deftly unscrewing the tiny decorative prongs at the base of the gem. With a faint click, the ruby popped out of its oxidized platinum casing, revealing a microscopic titanium chip embedded beneath the culet. "He didn't just keep the syndicate ledger. He kept Kane’s personal transaction records for the last twenty-five years."

She looked straight into Sebastian’s eyes. "We aren't going to that auction to bid, Sebastian. We're going there to execute a hostile takeover of our own."
