Chapter 28 - The Legacy of Stone

Two months later, Chicago welcomed its new royalty.
The grand opening of *Vance & Romano Fine Jewels* on the Magnificent Mile was the social event of the decade. The boutique was a triumph of architectural brilliance—bulletproof glass integrated seamlessly into minimalist Italian marble, state-of-the-art security systems hidden behind bespoke art installations, and display cases holding the world's most breathtaking ethically sourced gems.
The city’s elite, politicians, and European aristocrats filled the multi-story gallery, sipping vintage champagne as Norah moved effortlessly among them.
She wore a strapless ivory gown that accentuated the glowing emerald engagement ring on her finger. Sebastian stood nearby, conversing with the mayor of Chicago, looking every inch the respectable titan of industry. Yet whenever their eyes met across the crowded room, a private, electric heat passed between them that made Norah’s skin tingle.
"Miss Vance," an elderly patron with white hair and a British accent addressed her, admiring a display of cascading sapphire earrings. "Your work is transcendent. There hasn't been a jeweler with this level of structural precision since Daniel Vance disappeared from Paris in ninety-eight."
"Thank you, sir," Norah smiled warmly. "My father taught me that a gemstone's true beauty lies not in its perfection, but in how skillfully you cut around its flaws."
"A wise man," the patron nodded before rejoining the crowd.
As the evening wound down, the guests began to depart in fleets of black limousines. Sebastian dismissed the staff, locking the reinforced glass doors personally before walking back to where Norah stood behind the central display counter.
He loosened his bow tie, unbuttoning the top collar of his tuxedo shirt with an exhausted, satisfied sigh.
"I think we pulled it off," he said, leaning over the counter and resting his chin on his hands, looking up at her with adoration.
"We did," Norah smiled, gently running her fingers through his dark hair. "No explosions. No gunfights. Not a single drop of blood on the velvet."
"A tragedy," Sebastian teased, leaning up to kiss her lips. "I was hoping for a little excitement."
"You have a wedding to plan in three weeks, Sebastian," she laughed against his mouth. "You'll have all the danger you can handle trying to coordinate seating charts with my aunts."
Sebastian chuckled, wrapping his arms around her waist and lifting her onto the marble counter, stepping between her thighs. The intimacy was intoxicating, the quiet hum of the gallery sealing them in their own private sanctuary.
"I love you, Norah," he said softly, his forehead resting against hers. "More than the empire. More than my own life."
"I love you, Sebastian," she replied, cupping his face in her hands, her thumbs tracing the pale scars on his cheekbones. "With everything I am."

Suddenly, the boutique’s private delivery chute chimed.
A red service light blinked on the wall behind the secure workbench.
