Chapter 8 - The Crucible

The silence in the ballroom was so complete that the hiss of the spilled martini soaking into the linen tablecloth sounded like tearing paper.

Carlo didn't look at the folder. He looked past Sebastian, toward the three men standing near the grand French doors leading to the snow-covered terrace.

"You think a few micro-engravings on a forged stone mean anything to this table?" Carlo said, his voice dropping into a harsh, rasping growl. "These men swore loyalty to me while you were still in prep school, Sebastian. They know who pays their crews. They know who controls the ports."

"Look around the table, Carlo," Sebastian said quietly.

Carlo’s eyes darted left. Then right.

None of the capos were looking at him.

They were looking at the digital tablets resting beside their plates.

While Norah and Sebastian had walked down the center aisle, Luca had transmitted the decrypted files from the diamond directly to the personal accounts of every crew leader in the room. Not just the evidence of Elena’s murder—the evidence of Carlo skimming thirty percent of every maritime contract into private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands for two decades.

The Romano syndicate did not forgive murder when it brought heat.

They never forgave theft.

"You stole from the family, Carlo," said Don Vincente, an eighty-year-old capo sitting at the far corner, his voice like gravel. "You let Elena take the blame for the missing bonds while you put her money into your own pocket."

Carlo’s face turned the color of ash.

He didn't argue. He didn't beg.

He reached into his tuxedo pocket for a small black transmitter.

"Move!" Sebastian roared.

He flipped the heavy oak dining table onto its side with an explosion of shattered china, crystal, and silverware, shoving Norah down behind the thick mahogany barricade just as gunfire tore through the ballroom.

Carlo’s personal security detail—stationed outside the French doors—opened fire with automatic weapons, shattering the massive panes of glass and sending a blizzard of snow and shrapnel howling into the room.

The capos scrambled for cover, drawing their own weapons. The ballroom erupted into absolute pandemonium.

Norah pressed her back against the underside of the overturned table, her hands flying to the necklace.

"Norah, stay down!" Sebastian shouted, leaning over the table edge and firing three rapid rounds that dropped an operative trying to flank them from the terrace.

"I need the center stone!" Norah yelled over the deafening roar of gunshots.

"What?"

"The clasp mechanism!" she shouted, her fingers working furiously against the platinum prongs. "The laser weld wasn't just to hide the mark, Sebastian! Varga built a fail-safe into the housing!"

She snapped the lower hinge with her bare thumb, ignoring the sharp edge slicing into her skin.

From the broken cavity of the central setting, a tiny brass cylinder rolled into her palm—a physical micro-key from an old Swiss private vault, hidden behind the synthetic ruby for seventeen years.

"He didn't just leave a ledger!" Norah cried, holding the tiny key up to Sebastian. "He left the location of the original necklace!"

Sebastian grabbed the key, his eyes blazing with an unholy fire.

Across the smoke-filled ballroom, Carlo was sprinting toward the shattered terrace doors, covered by two surviving gunmen.

"Luca!" Sebastian bellowed. "Get Norah to the car!"

"No!" Norah grabbed Sebastian’s lapel, her knuckles white against the black silk. "Don't let him leave this house!"

Sebastian looked down at her. Amid the gunfire, the smoke, and the smell of blood and burning cordite, he reached down, cupped the back of her neck with his hand, and kissed her—hard, fierce, and breathless.

"Wait for me in the car," he whispered against her lips.

Then he vaulted over the table and charged into the blizzard after his uncle.
