Chapter 11 - The Gala of Wolves

|
Saturday evening arrived with a dramatic blizzard that coated the massive wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate in glittering frost.
Inside the grand ballroom, two hundred crystal chandeliers cast brilliant, golden light across three hundred of Chicago's wealthiest elites.
Senators, judges, corporate tycoons, and international consuls mingled in black tuxedos and shimmering silk gowns, sipping vintage champagne.
The music of a forty-piece live orchestra soared toward the gilded ceilings, filling the vast hall with majestic harmony.
Yet, despite the grandeur of the setting, every conversation suddenly ground to a dead halt when the double oak doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.
The estate majordomo tapped his brass staff against the floor, his voice booming across the silent ballroom:
“Presenting Don Alessandro Moretti, accompanied by Miss Meline Pierce.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gathering of high-society socialites.
Alessandro descended the wide marble steps looking devastatingly powerful in a bespoke black tuxedo with satin lapels.
On his arm walked Meline, and the sight of her stole the breath from every soul in the room.
She wore a custom-tailored emerald-velvet gown designed by Milan’s finest couturier, cut to celebrate every soft, feminine curve of her fuller figure.
The rich green fabric flowed around her like liquid jewel, complemented by a modest antique diamond pendant that had belonged to Alessandro’s mother.
Her dark brown hair was styled in an elegant, sweeping updo that highlighted the graceful line of her neck and her luminous, radiant skin.
She did not walk with the timid, hunched posture of an insecure servant; she moved with the serene, unshakeable dignity of an empress.
Beside them walked Giovanni, resplendent in an immaculate navy suit, leaning proudly on his silver walking stick, beaming with grandfatherly joy.
“Good heavens,” whispered Mrs. Dupont, a notorious society critic, lowering her opera glasses in shock.
“She is absolutely magnificent!”
“Who is she?” asked another guest.
“They say she is the woman who saved Giovanni Moretti’s life!”
Across the ballroom, standing near the towering ice sculpture, Camilla Vance stood frozen, her fingers crushing her crystal champagne flute so tightly the glass cracked.
She had expected Meline to look clumsy, awkward, and ridiculous in high-society attire; instead, Meline commanded the entire room without uttering a single word.
Alessandro guided Meline down the final steps, his hand resting securely against the small of her back, radiating fierce, unyielding pride.
He leaned down, his warm lips brushing lightly against her ear as the crowd watched in mesmerized silence.
“You are the most breathtaking vision this room has ever seen, Meline,” Alessandro whispered, his voice thick with raw devotion.
Meline looked up at him, a genuine, radiant smile illuminating her face.
“I was terrified my knees would give out on those stairs, Alessandro,” she whispered back.
“I will never let you fall,” he answered with absolute, unyielding conviction.
Before she could reply, the lights across the grand ballroom suddenly flickered violently, dying into pitch-black darkness as the backup generators failed.

Screams of terror erupted from the guests as the live orchestra stopped mid-chord.
The trap had been sprung.
