Chapter 14 - Confessions by the Hearth

Meline stared at Alessandro through a blur of unshed tears, her fingers trembling within his steady, powerful grasp.
“Alessandro, look at me,” she whispered, her voice cracking with the lingering insecurities of a lifetime of judgment.
“I am not a polished socialite with a family crest or an Ivy League degree.”
“I am a plus-size girl from the working-class streets who spent her youth worrying about utility bills and secondhand shoes.”
“High society will look at you, the head of the Moretti family, and they will laugh behind their fans.”
Alessandro did not hesitate; he leaned forward, cupping both sides of her face in his large, warm hands.
His touch was reverent, gentle, and filled with an overwhelming devotion that banished every doubt lingering in her mind.
“Let them laugh, Meline,” Alessandro murmured, his thumbs wiping away the single tear tracing down her cheek.
“Those people spend millions of dollars trying to buy an ounce of the grace, dignity, and beauty you possess naturally.”
“I don't want a fragile porcelain doll who shrinks in the rain and treats the vulnerable like trash.”
“I want the woman whose heart is as vast and generous as the sea.”
“I love your kindness, I love your courage, and God help me, I love every single curve of your beautiful body.”
Meline let out a soft, choking sob of pure relief, the final wall of her guarded heart collapsing into his embrace.
She leaned forward, burying her face into the crook of his neck, breathing in the intoxicating scent of sandalwood and rain.
Alessandro pulled her into his arms, gathering her fuller frame against his broad chest, holding her as though she were life itself.
He tilted her chin upward with gentle insistence, his dark eyes searching hers for one final, sacred second of permission.
When his lips met hers, it was not the demanding kiss of a mafia boss, but a deep, tender promise of eternal protection and devotion.
The world around them faded into the gentle crackle of the hearth fire, the shadows of the past completely washed away by the light of truth.
Meline wound her arms around his broad shoulders, kissing him back with all the passion, hope, and love she had carried in secret.
When they finally parted, their foreheads resting together, Alessandro smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his rugged features.
He reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box lined with aged midnight-blue satin.
He opened the lid, revealing an extraordinary antique ring featuring a cushion-cut emerald surrounded by brilliant, clear diamonds.
“This belonged to my mother, Rosa,” Alessandro said softly, his voice vibrating with sacred honor.
“My father gave it to me on his seventieth birthday, telling me to keep it locked away until I found a woman who reminded me why we fight for family.”
He took her left hand, holding her fourth finger gently between his thumb and index finger.
“Meline Pierce, will you do me the greatest honor of my life and become my wife?”
Tears of unadulterated joy spilled over Meline’s eyelashes, her smile radiant enough to outshine the morning sun.
“Yes, Alessandro,” she whispered with complete, unshakeable certainty.
“A thousand times, yes.”
He slid the emerald ring onto her finger, where it settled with a perfect, comfortable weight, glowing like an eternal evergreen in the firelight.
From the doorway, a soft, clearing of a throat interrupted their embrace.
They turned to see Giovanni standing in the entrance, leaning on his walking stick, a tray of warm breakfast pastries resting on the console table beside him.
“Well,” the old man said, wiping a tear of pure happiness from his eye with a linen handkerchief.
“It looks like I won't have to eat cold crackers in the rain ever again.”
Alessandro laughed, standing up and pulling Meline to her feet, wrapping his arm firmly around her waist.

“Never again, Dad,” Alessandro promised, looking at his future bride with eyes full of tomorrow.
“This family will never be cold again.”
