Chapter 9 - The Debt Vanishes

|

Two days later, the morning sun rose bright and cold over the industrial alleys of Chicago's West Side.

In a cramped, second-floor storefront office bearing the faded sign Apex Financial Services, a man named Victor Cole sat counting stacks of cash.

Cole was a predatory loan shark who specialized in buying up unpaid medical debts from struggling working-class families and charging extortionate interest rates.

He had held the legal liens against Meline’s late grandfather for eighteen months, constantly threatening to seize her mother’s meager pension.

Suddenly, the frosted glass door of the office splintered into a thousand pieces as two heavy boots kicked it off its iron hinges.

Four enormous men in black tactical coats stepped into the small room, their presence sucking all the oxygen from the air.

Victor Cole leaped to his feet, reaching desperately for the snub-nosed revolver hidden beneath his desk blotter.

Before his fingers could touch the steel, a gloved hand caught his wrist with bone-crushing pressure, slamming his hand flat against the wood.

Alessandro Moretti leaned over the desk, his dark wool coat open, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal dominance.

“Good morning, Mr. Cole,” Alessandro said smoothly, his voice dropping into that chilling, icy calm that made criminals weep.

Cole choked on his breath, his face turning an ugly shade of gray as he recognized the undisputed king of Chicago's underworld.

“Mr. Moretti!” Cole stammered, his teeth chattering in frantic terror.

“I swear to God, I didn't know this territory belonged to you! I pay my street taxes to Don Corrado on the first of every month!”

Alessandro tightened his grip on Cole’s wrist until the small bones in the loan shark’s hand began to creak.

Cole let out a whimpering shriek, dropping to his knees behind the desk.

“I don't care about your street taxes, Victor,” Alessandro whispered, leaning down so his lips were two inches from the loan shark’s ear.

“I am here regarding the debt account of Arthur Pierce.”

Cole blinked through tears of agony, his mind racing frantically to recall the name among hundreds of poor debtors.

“Arthur Pierce? The old carpenter who died at County Hospital?”

“Arthur Pierce was an honest man who spent forty years building homes in this city,” Alessandro stated with cold, unyielding authority.

“His granddaughter, Meline Pierce, currently resides in my home under my personal protection.”

Frank stepped forward, tossing a thick manila envelope onto the desk.

Inside was thirty thousand dollars in crisp hundred-dollar bills, accompanied by a certified legal release document prepared by the Moretti family attorneys.

“You will sign this complete discharge of debt,” Alessandro commanded, releasing Cole’s bruised wrist.

“You will stamp every medical lien fully satisfied.”

“And if you ever speak the name Pierce, mail another letter to her mother, or walk within three miles of their neighborhood again, Frank will visit you without a checkbook.”

Cole grabbed a pen with his trembling, uninjured left hand, signing every line with frantic speed, not daring to lift his eyes from the paper.

“Done! It’s done, Mr. Moretti! Fully satisfied! Zero balance!” Cole cried, stamping the official seal onto the legal certificate.

Alessandro took the stamped document, inspected it with cool satisfaction, and folded it neatly into his breast pocket.

“Have a productive day, Mr. Cole,” Alessandro said calmly, turning on his heel and walking out through the shattered doorway.

Three hours later, back at the estate, Meline was arranging fresh chrysanthemums in the library vases when Alessandro walked into the room.

He did not say a word; he simply walked over to the table and handed her the folded legal release.

Meline opened the paper, her eyes skimming the certified hospital seals, the zeroed balances, and the official release of all liens against her family.

She stared at the document, her hands trembling so violently that the paper rustled against the silence of the room.

“This is sixty thousand dollars with the accumulated penalties,” she gasped, looking up at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.

“How… why would you do this?”

Alessandro stepped closer, his warm, strong hand resting gently against her cheek, tilting her face up to meet his steady gaze.

“Because a woman with a soul as pure as yours should never have to carry the weight of a predatory shackle,” he said softly.

Tears spilled freely over Meline’s eyelashes, soaking into his warm leather glove as months of suffocating anxiety melted away in an instant.

She stepped forward, burying her face against his chest, her arms wrapping around his waist as she wept tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude.

Alessandro wrapped his powerful arms tightly around her fuller frame, resting his chin against her soft brown hair, holding her as though she were the most precious treasure in the world.
