Chapter 15 - The Lady of Moretti Hall

|

Six months later, the early summer sun bathed the sprawling gardens of the Moretti estate in brilliant golden light.

Thousands of white roses, pale hydrangeas, and sweet jasmine bloomed in fragrant abundance along the stone terraces.

The massive iron gates of the estate stood wide open, welcoming hundreds of guests from every corner of Chicago.

Yet, this was not a gathering of cold, calculating underworld families or corrupt politicians angling for territory.

Sitting in the front rows of the outdoor garden pavilion were the dockworkers, the neighborhood nurses, the kitchen staff, and Meline’s mother, who wept joyful tears into a lace handkerchief.

Every single employee of the estate was dressed in fine festive attire, seated as honored family guests rather than working staff.

At the front of the floral archway stood Alessandro, looking magnificent in an ivory dinner jacket and dark trousers, his hands clasped before him.

Beside him stood Frank as his best man, alongside Giovanni, who stood tall and proud without his walking stick for the first time in years.

The string quartet began to play a soft, sweeping melody, and the entire assembly rose to their feet as one.

Meline stepped out onto the rose-petal pathway, walking on the arm of Father Thomas, the elderly priest from her childhood parish.

She was a vision of breathtaking, radiant beauty in a custom ivory lace gown that flowed around her fuller curves like seafoam.

A cathedral-length veil trailed behind her on the grass, crowned with fresh white blossoms woven into her dark brown hair.

She wore no heavy jewels, save for the emerald ring on her finger and her late grandfather’s pocket watch pinned securely over her heart.

As she approached the altar, Alessandro stepped down, his eyes locked onto hers with a reverence so profound that the entire world seemed to fade away.

He took her hand from the priest, bowing his head in deep gratitude, his fingers interlacing with hers with unbreakable strength.

“You are my miracle, Meline,” Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with emotion as they turned to face the altar.

Father Thomas smiled, raising his hands to bless the couple under the radiant summer sky.

“Dearly beloved,” the priest began, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle summer breeze.

“We are gathered here today to witness the triumph of love over fear, and grace over pride.”

“For true nobility is not born of titles, wealth, or power.”

“It is born in the quiet kindness of a soul that chooses to see the dignity in others when the world looks away.”

When the time came to exchange their vows, Alessandro spoke from his heart, his baritone voice ringing out across the blooming gardens:

“Meline, you found my family when we were wandering in the cold shadows of our own pride.”

“You protected my father when he had nothing to offer you, and you taught me what it means to be truly strong.”

“I vow to honor you, to cherish you, and to protect your peace with every resource, every breath, and every beat of my heart.”

“You are my queen, my sanctuary, and my home.”

Tears of pure happiness shone in Meline’s eyes as she placed her hand over his heart, speaking her vows with steady, joyous clarity:

“Alessandro, you looked past my fears, tore down my doubts, and showed me that love is a fortress that never fails.”

“You gave my family freedom, and you gave my heart a purpose worthy of a lifetime.”

“I promise to stand beside you through every storm, to walk with you in truth, and to love you unconditionally until my last breath.”

Father Thomas blessed their rings, declaring with joyful authority:

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

“Alessandro, you may kiss your bride.”

Alessandro didn't hesitate for a single second; he wrapped his powerful arms around Meline’s waist, lifting her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss of eternal devotion.

A thunderous roar of applause, cheers, and standing ovations erupted from the hundreds of guests gathered on the lawn.

Rose petals rained down upon them as they turned to face their people, their hands tightly entwined, their smiles outshining the midday sun.

Giovanni stepped forward, tears streaming freely down his weathered cheeks, pulling both of them into a tight, warm embrace.

“Welcome home, daughter,” the old patriarch whispered, kissing Meline’s cheek.

Down in the garden pavilion, tables were set with steaming bowls of homemade soup, crusty bread, and abundant feasts for every single guest to share.
