Chapter 12 - Betrayal at Midnight

|
Darkness swallowed the grand ballroom, broken only by the dim emergency wall sconces that cast long, grotesque shadows across the marble floor.
Panicked screams tore through the crowd as high-society socialites scrambled toward the exits in absolute chaos.
Alessandro’s reaction was instantaneous; before the second scream could echo, his arm pulled Meline behind his broad, muscular frame.
“Frank!” Alessandro’s voice boomed over the shrieking crowd with thunderous authority.
“Lock down the main hall and secure the guests! Nobody moves toward the outer perimeter!”
Suddenly, the heavy glass French doors leading to the east terrace shattered into thousands of explosive shards.
Six masked men clad in black tactical armor burst into the hall, wielding suppressed submachine guns, led by Don Corrado himself.
Beside Corrado stepped Beatrice, her eyes wild with vindictive triumph, pointing a shaking finger directly toward the grand staircase.
“There she is!” Beatrice screamed over the din.
“Grab the maid! Leave the old man!”
Two gunmen lunged forward, aiming their weapons toward the stairs where Meline stood beside Giovanni.
Seeing the black barrels level toward the frail patriarch, Meline didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.
Throwing all regard for her own life aside, she threw her body across Giovanni, shielding his head and chest with her own frame.
“Down, Giovanni!” she cried, bracing herself for the impact of the bullets.
A deafening roar shattered the darkness as Alessandro drew his custom semiautomatic pistol from his tuxedo holster.
With lethal, pinpoint accuracy, Alessandro fired three rapid shots, dropping the two approaching mercenaries before their boots could touch the first marble step.
“You made a fatal mistake entering my home, Corrado,” Alessandro roared, stepping down the stairs like an avenging demon.
Suddenly, the ballroom’s emergency halogen beams flared to life, illuminating the room in blinding, daylight clarity.
The security blackout had not been a successful breach; it had been an orchestrated counter-ambush.
From the upper balconies and hidden wall panels, twenty elite Moretti tactical operators emerged with high-powered rifles trained directly onto Corrado’s men.
Within ten seconds, the remaining mercenaries dropped their weapons, falling to their knees on the glass-strewn floor with their hands clasped behind their heads.
Corrado stood frozen near the shattered terrace doors, his heavy pistol dangling uselessly from his trembling fingers as four laser sights converged on his chest.
Alessandro walked down the final steps, his weapon lowered, his expression carved from ancient, merciless stone.
He stopped three feet from his rival, his dark eyes radiating pure, unadulterated death.
“Did you really believe that a disgruntled housekeeper with a copied keycard could bypass my security network, Corrado?” Alessandro asked, his voice chillingly calm.
“Frank traced Beatrice’s phone calls to your steakhouse four hours after she left this property.”
“We watched you buy the weapons.”
“We watched you hire the mercenaries.”
“And we let you walk into this ballroom so every family in this city could witness your complete, irreversible execution.”
Corrado’s face turned an ugly, mottled gray, his knees trembling as the reality of his total defeat crushed him.
Behind them, Beatrice tried to scramble backward through the broken glass, but two armed guards seized her by the arms and dragged her forward.
“Alessandro, please!” Beatrice wailed, bleeding from shallow glass cuts on her cheeks.
“It was Camilla! Camilla planned everything! She paid me to steal the key!”
Across the room, Camilla Vance tried to slip toward the service exit, but Frank stepped into her path with two armed enforcers, blocking her way.
On the staircase, Giovanni slowly stood up, assisted by Meline, whose emerald dress was miraculously unharmed.
The old man walked down the steps, his silver walking stick clicking firmly against the marble floor until he stood beside his son.
Giovanni looked down at Corrado with an expression of profound disgust.
“You always were a cowardly hyena, Corrado,” Giovanni said softly.
“My son rules this city because he protects his people.”
“You will spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a federal penitentiary where your name means nothing.”
Alessandro signaled to Frank with a single, decisive nod.
“Take Corrado and his men to the federal marshals waiting at the gate,” Alessandro ordered.
“Deliver the audio recordings of Camilla Vance’s conspiracy directly to the State Supreme Court Ethics Committee.”

“And as for Beatrice,” Alessandro added, his eyes fixing on the weeping former housekeeper.
“Let her spend the next fifteen years scrubbing the concrete floors of Cook County Jail.”
