Chapter 11 - The Confession

|
Realizing that no rescue was coming, Ethan Caldwell finally broke under the crushing weight of the evidence.
Surrounded by his defense team in the federal courthouse conference room, he signed a comprehensive confession.
His hand shook so violently that his signature was barely legible across the bottom of the legal forms.
Across thirty pages of sworn testimony, Ethan laid bare every single crime he had committed over the last four years.
He detailed how he had diverted night-vision equipment directly from the shipping docks.
He explained how he had staged an accidental warehouse fire to cover up the disappearance of high-end optics.
He named the corrupt customs inspectors who had turned a blind eye at the commercial ports.
Most importantly, he confirmed that Major General Harrison had received cash kickbacks delivered in brown leather satchels.
When Evelyn entered the room to witness the final signing, Ethan looked like a ghost of his former self.
His cheeks were hollow, his eyes sunken, and his arrogant posture completely shattered.
He looked up at Evelyn, his voice barely a rasp.
“Why didn’t you flinch?” Ethan asked, his voice trembling with genuine curiosity.
“When the coffee hit your chest... why didn’t you scream?”
Evelyn stood beside the table, looking down at him with quiet dignity.
“Because I knew who you were the second I walked into that room, Ethan,” she answered evenly.
“You were a coward who used uniform authority to bully honorable men.”
“And I knew that the moment you lost control, your entire empire would collapse under its own weight.”
Ethan closed his eyes, resting his forehead against the cold table in profound defeat.
