Chapter 15 - The New Dawn

|
Three months later, the morning sun rose bright and clear over the coastal Marine base.
Special Agent Evelyn Cross walked along the quiet sidewalk leading to the battalion headquarters.
The building was peaceful now, filled with the focused, honorable energy of men and women doing their duty.
She carried no investigative folders today; she wore a clean, tailored navy suit, pristine and unblemished.
Captain Archer met her at the entrance, wearing a proud, untroubled smile.
Pinned to his collar were the shining gold oak leaves of a newly promoted Major.
“Major Archer,” Evelyn greeted him, extending a hand with a warm smile.
Archer grasped her hand firmly, genuine gratitude shining in his eyes.
“I owe this to you, Evelyn,” Archer said sincerely.
“If you hadn't walked into that room that day, this battalion would still be living in fear.”
“You gave these Marines their pride back.”
Evelyn walked with him up the central staircase to the second-floor briefing room.
The heavy mahogany conference table was spotless, gleaming beneath the morning sunlight streaming through the open blinds.
A group of young corporals and sergeants were gathered around a whiteboard, planning upcoming tactical exercises with enthusiasm.
Corporal Jackson caught sight of Evelyn from across the room and stood at crisp attention, saluting with deep respect.
Evelyn returned the gesture with a respectful nod, acknowledging the courage it had taken for him to speak out.
She stepped up to the window and looked out across the sprawling parade grounds.
Below, a fresh company of young recruits was marching in perfect formation, their cadence calling out clear and strong into the blue sky.
The stain of corruption had been washed away completely, replaced by honor, discipline, and true brotherhood.
Evelyn Cross reached down, picked up her briefcase, and turned toward the doorway.
Her mission here was finished.

With a quiet, confident stride, she walked out into the warm Carolina sunshine, ready for whatever duty awaited her next.
