Chapter 5 - The Spider's Web

Back at the regional federal operations center, Evelyn Cross spread the contents of the blue folder across a large conference table.
Forensic cyber analysts had already cracked the encryption on Ethan’s seized personal laptop.
What they found went far beyond the actions of a single rogue non-commissioned officer.
Ethan had constructed a digital ledger cataloging every illicit transaction made over the previous three years.
Every bribe, every kickback, and every payoff was meticulously logged with dates, amounts, and initials.
Evelyn leaned over the illuminated monitor, her finger tracing a series of recurring wire transfers.
A significant percentage of the illicit revenue did not stay in Ethan’s offshore account.
Funds were regularly routed through secondary shell companies to a prominent real estate fund in northern Virginia.
The registered director of that fund was a retired senior officer with deep political connections in Washington.
“He had protection,” Supervisory Agent Marcus Reed stated, stepping up beside Evelyn with a fresh mug of black coffee.
“Nobody moves this much military hardware through a naval port without high-level cover.”
Evelyn accepted the coffee, taking a measured sip while keeping her eyes glued to the screen.
“Caldwell thought his benefactors made him invincible,” Evelyn observed calmly.
“He believed that so long as the kickbacks kept flowing upward, nobody would ever dare check his manifests.”
“That arrogance was his fatal blind spot.”
She pointed at an email chain timestamped just forty-eight hours earlier.
Ethan had received a message warning him that a civilian auditor was arriving on base.
The sender had explicitly instructed Ethan to intimidate her, disrupt her investigation, and force her off the installation.
Ethan had followed those instructions to the letter when he poured the scalding coffee into Evelyn’s lap.
He thought he was proving his dominance to his shadowy handlers.
In reality, he had triggered his own catastrophic downfall on camera.
Evelyn picked up her secure phone and dialed the Deputy Attorney General’s private line.

“We have the network,” Evelyn said without hesitation.
“Authorize the expansion of the grand jury warrants immediately.”
