Chapter 14 - The Verdict and the Sentence

|
Six weeks later, the day of formal sentencing arrived.
The courtroom was once again packed to the doors, every spectator eager to witness the final chapter of Ethan’s downfall.
Judge Vance sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, reviewing the pre-sentencing reports with a stern expression.
Ethan stood before her, looking emaciated and completely broken by weeks of federal detention.
When given the opportunity to speak, Ethan stepped up to the microphone, his voice barely audible.
“I disgraced my uniform,” Ethan whispered, tears streaming unchecked down his pale face.
“I betrayed my brothers, and I violated every oath I ever swore to this country.”
“I have no excuses for what I did.”
Judge Vance set her reading glasses down upon the bench and looked directly at the defendant.
“Mr. Caldwell, you were entrusted with the defense of this nation and the lives of young men and women,” Judge Vance stated coldly.
“Instead of honoring that sacred trust, you used your authority to line your pockets and intimidate honorable service members.”
“Your actions represent the highest form of betrayal.”
She picked up her wooden gavel, her tone cutting through the air like a razor.
“It is the order of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a term of twenty-eight years without the possibility of parole.”
“You are ordered to pay complete restitution of four point two million dollars.”
“Furthermore, the military court-martial has decreed that you are dishonorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps.”
“You are stripped of all rank, all medals, all pension rights, and all military honors.”
The heavy wooden gavel slammed down against the sound block with a definitive, booming crack.

The sound signaled the permanent end of Ethan Caldwell’s freedom.
He was led away through the reinforced security door, his chains dragging heavily along the floor, never to wear a uniform again.
