Chapter 12 - The Arraignment

|
The federal district courtroom was packed to maximum capacity on the morning of the formal plea hearing.
Reporters, active-duty Marines, and concerned citizens filled every wooden bench in the gallery.
At nine o’clock sharp, the side door opened, and federal marshals led Ethan Caldwell into the room.
He was clad in bright orange prison scrubs, with heavy chains wrapped around his waist and ankles.
The rhythmic clink of his iron restraints echoed loudly in the cavernous courtroom.
He kept his gaze fixed firmly on the carpeted floor, unable to meet the eyes of the Marines seated behind him.
Judge Eleanor Vance, known across the federal circuit for her uncompromising intolerance of corruption, took the bench.
The courtroom rose to its feet, the atmosphere electric with anticipation.
“Staff Sergeant Ethan Caldwell, you stand charged before this court with forty federal felonies,” Judge Vance began, her voice ringing with solemn authority.
“How do you plead to Count One: Conspiracy to Defraud the United States?”
Ethan stood before the microphone, his hands trembling beside his hips.
His attorney nudged him gently in the ribs.
Ethan swallowed hard, his voice cracking through the sound system.
“Guilty, your honor.”
“How do you plead to Count Two: Theft of Government Property Exceeding One Million Dollars?”
“Guilty, your honor.”
Count by count, the charges were read aloud to the entire courtroom.
With every admission of guilt, the legacy Ethan had built over twelve years of military service was shredded to pieces.
The public watched in fascinated silence as the once-untouchable tyrant confessed to every shameful act.

Justice was not just being delivered behind closed doors.
