Chapter 3 - The Hallway of Shame

|

The heavy steel handcuffs ratcheted tightly against Staff Sergeant Ethan Caldwell’s wrists.

The cold metal bit into his skin with an unforgiving sharpness.

Two federal tactical agents flanked him on either side, their grips like iron vices on his biceps.

Ethan tried to pull his shoulders back, desperate to preserve a shred of the swagger that had defined him for years.

Yet as the briefing room doors swung open, his legs felt strangely weightless.

Word of the confrontation had already spread through the battalion building like wildfire through dry pine.

Dozens of Marines lined both sides of the second-floor hallway in total silence.

Corporals, sergeants, and seasoned gunnery sergeants stood at rigid attention against the concrete walls.

Not a single person stepped forward to protest his arrest.

Not a single comrade offered a word of sympathy.

Every eye burned into Ethan with a mixture of quiet fury and cold contempt.

These were the same men Ethan had mocked, belittled, and threatened for months on end.

Now, they watched him stumble forward in dishonor, his polished dress shoes dragging along the gray floor.

Directly behind the escort walked Special Agent Evelyn Cross.

Her posture was straight and unyielding, her stained blazer worn like a badge of battlefield honor.

In her right hand, she carried the thick blue folder, resting securely against her side.

As they reached the central staircase, Ethan glanced back over his shoulder, his jaw trembling.

“You’re going to regret this, Cross,” Ethan hissed beneath his breath.

Evelyn did not even blink.

“Save your breath for the magistrate, Staff Sergeant,” she replied softly.

“You will need every ounce of it to explain your treason.”

They descended the stairs into the blinding North Carolina sunlight.

The flashing red and blue strobe lights of the three black Suburbans illuminated the brick courtyard in vibrant pulses.

A crowd of base personnel gathered near the perimeter fence, watching the once-untouchable supply boss get shoved into the back of a federal vehicle.

The heavy door slammed shut with a deafening thud.

The dark tinted glass sealed Ethan away from the only world he had ever known.
