Chapter 11 - The Financial Noose

The morning light poured through the tall windows of the estate's private study, illuminating a scene of calculated preparation.
Norah sat at the master terminal, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rhythmic, lethal efficiency.
Dante stood behind her, a fresh black sling supporting his right arm, a dark silk button-down shirt draped over his bandaged shoulder.
The kiss from the night before hung between them like a charged current, altering every glance and every accidental brush of their hands.
"The trap is set," Norah announced, leaning back to stretch her stiff shoulders.
Dante placed his uninjured left hand on her shoulder, his thumb gently massaging the tension from her neck with effortless warmth.
"Explain the mechanics to me, my brilliant strategist."
"Salvatore believes the digital authorization failed last night because of a routing error caused by the network disruption," she began.
"I have created a mirrored gateway that mimics the Port of Newark's maritime transfer clearance system."
"So when he attempts to re-enter his clearance codes—"
"The system will appear to process the transfer of the shipping lines to Moretti's account."
"What will it actually do?"
"It will divert the twenty-two million dollars directly back into your primary operating escrow account."
"And more importantly, it will trigger an automated forensic trace that logs his physical IP location and captures his voice authentication."
Dante chuckled, a low, predatory sound that rumbled with deep satisfaction.
"You are not simply an accountant, Norah; you are an executioner with a spreadsheet."
"I prefer to think of myself as an auditor delivering an overdue bill."
Marco stepped into the study, holding an encrypted satellite phone with an expression of sharp urgency.
"Boss, Salvatore just reached out through a clean burn line."
"What does the snake want?" Dante asked, his demeanor instantly turning to ice.
"He claims he was out of town visiting his sister in New Jersey when the ambush went down."
"He is offering to meet you personally at the old naval shipyard warehouse in Brooklyn to 'coordinate your security response.'"
Dante’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits of amber fire.
"He wants to verify that I survived the ambush before he executes the final transfer with Moretti."
"If you go there, Dante, it will be an ambush," Norah warned, turning in her chair to look up at him with genuine fear.
"Salvatore knows he is running out of time."
"Of course it is an ambush," Dante agreed calmly, walking toward the antique cabinet that concealed his armory.
"Which makes it the ideal place to close the trap."
"You are wounded; you can barely lift your right arm!"
Dante reached into the cabinet with his left hand, effortlessly drawing a customized short-barreled tactical shotgun and checking its slide.
"I shoot just as accurately with my left hand, Norah, and I do not fight my battles alone."
"I'm coming with you," she stated, rising from the chair with absolute conviction.
"Out of the question," Dante snapped, his voice hard and unyielding for the first time since the night in Queens.
"You stay here where the perimeter is secured by thirty men."
"The digital trap requires manual authentication from a live terminal within five hundred yards of his receiver to bypass his proxy wall!" she countered fiercely.
"If I am not monitoring the handshake from the surveillance van outside the warehouse, the code will fail, and Salvatore will vanish with your money."
Dante stared at her, his jaw working as his protective instinct clashed violently with the tactical reality of the situation.
"If anything happens to you—"
"Nothing will happen to me, because you have the best security team in the state, and because I trust you."
The simple declaration hit him like a physical blow, softening the ruthless planes of his chiseled face.
He closed the distance between them, his left hand reaching out to gently cup the nape of her neck.
"You stay inside the armored command van with two armed escorts at all times."
"Agreed."
"And if I tell you to withdraw, you hit the gas and do not look back."
"I'll think about it," she replied with a defiant tilt of her chin.
Dante shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and profound admiration blazing in his gaze.

"Get your coat, Mr. Russo; we have an audit to conclude."
