Chapter 13 - The Debt is Paid

|

The afternoon sun cast long, golden beams of autumn light across the manicured lawns of Dante’s private estate.

Inside the grand study, the heavy mahogany desk was immaculate, cleared of all tactical maps, weapons, and encrypted drives.

Norah stood near the French doors opening onto the stone terrace, wearing her simple, familiar wool coat and holding her canvas tote.

The door clicked open, and Dante walked into the room, dressed in an elegant charcoal three-piece suit without a single crease.

His right arm was free from the sling, though he moved his shoulder with careful, measured deliberation.

Behind him walked a young man with messy brown hair, bruised knuckles, and an expression of profound, sheepish guilt.

"Norah!" Finn gasped, his voice cracking with emotion as he rushed across the room.

"Finn!" Norah dropped her tote bag, wrapping her arms tightly around her younger brother’s neck.

She squeezed him with all the fierce, desperate love she had harbored since their father passed away.

She pulled back, inspecting his face, checking his eyes, and instantly noticing the dark purple bruise fading along his jawline.

"Are you hurt? Did they do anything to you?" she demanded, her maternal protective instincts flaring to life.

"I'm fine, Norah; honestly, I'm okay," Finn stammered, casting a terrified, reverent glance toward the mafia boss standing by the desk.

"Mr. Russo’s men pulled me out of a basement apartment in Jersey where Moretti's goons had stashed me."

"They didn't lay a finger on me."

Dante stepped forward, his expression severe and unreadable as his imposing frame towered over the twenty-two-year-old boy.

"Your sister gave up her life savings, stepped into a crossfire, and outsmarted the most dangerous men in this city to keep you breathing, Finn."

Finn swallowed hard, his face turning crimson with shame as he stared down at his scuffed sneakers.

"I know, Mr. Russo... I am so sorry, Norah; I swear on our mother's grave I will never touch a card or a marker again."

"You won't have the opportunity to touch them," Dante said, his voice ringing with cold authority.

"I have arranged a position for you with a maritime logistics subsidiary in Seattle."

"A clean salary, legitimate health benefits, and a one-way plane ticket departing from JFK in three hours."

"If you ever set foot in a gambling den again, I will personally ensure you spend the next decade cleaning engine bilges in Alaska."

"Yes, sir; thank you, Mr. Russo; I won't let you down," Finn whispered, visibly shaking with gratitude.

Marco stepped into the room, gently gripping Finn’s shoulder.

"Car is waiting out front, kid; let's get you to the airport."

Finn turned to Norah, hugging her one last time with tears welling in his hazel eyes.

"I don't deserve you, Norah."

"Just make something of yourself, Finn; that’s all I ever wanted," she whispered, kissing his cheek before watching him walk out the door.

When the door clicked shut, the massive room felt suddenly, overwhelmingly quiet.

Dante walked over to his desk, picking up a thick manila folder and a familiar leather-bound promissory note.

He picked up an antique silver lighter, flicked the flame to life, and held the corner of Finn’s eighty-five-thousand-dollar debt agreement into the fire.

Norah watched in silence as the paper curled into black ash, dropping harmlessly into a crystal tray.

"The debt is officially erased," Dante announced, dusting his hands off with slow, deliberate movements.

He then reached into his desk drawer and placed a thick manila envelope on the polished wood.

"Your twelve thousand dollars is inside that envelope, along with an additional two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

Norah blinked, her breath catching in her throat.

"What is the extra money for?"

"Your consulting fee for saving a twenty-two-million-dollar maritime shipping corridor."

"I didn't do this for your money, Dante."

"I know why you did it, Norah, which is why you earned every single cent."

He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from where she stood by the sunlit terrace doors.

His amber eyes were filled with an agonizing, unspoken longing that broke her heart into a thousand pieces.

"You are completely free, Miss Gallagher."

"No more guards, no more ambushes, no more monsters lurking in your hallway."

"You can return to your quiet accounting firm, your small apartment, and your ordinary, safe life."

Norah looked down at the envelope of cash, then up into the face of the man who had set her soul on fire.

She wanted to tell him that safety was meaningless without him, that the ordinary world now felt gray and dead.

Yet she saw the resolute wall of nobility in his eyes; he was letting her go because he believed his world would eventually destroy her.

"Thank you, Dante," she whispered, her voice trembling with unshed tears.

Dante reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her bottom lip with breathtaking sweetness.

"Goodbye, princess."

Norah picked up her canvas tote, turned her back on the only man who had ever truly seen her, and walked out into the cold autumn air.
