Chapter 9 - The Ambush

|
The world exploded into a chaotic symphony of shattering glass, screaming tires, and the deafening thunder of automatic weapon fire.
The Maybach swerved violently as Marco slammed on the accelerator, trying desperately to shake off the armored vehicles flanking their sides.
Dante kept his massive body pressed completely over Norah, using his broad shoulders and heavy torso as a living shield.
She could feel the furious beat of his heart through his shirt and the iron strength of his arms locking her securely against the floor.
"Stay down, do not move!" Dante barked against her ear, his voice commanding and devoid of fear.
A second heavy SUV smashed into the passenger side, caving the door inward and sending the limousine spinning across three lanes of traffic.
The vehicle careened off the concrete highway divider with a bone-jarring impact that threw Norah against the footrest.
The Maybach finally ground to a halt against an abandoned industrial loading dock beneath the towering shadow of the Queensboro Bridge.
Steam hissed violently from the crushed radiator, mingling with the heavy autumn fog rolling off the East River.
"Marco, status!" Dante yelled, checking the chamber of his weapon with rapid, practiced efficiency.
"Engine is dead, Boss! They are boxing us in from both sides!" Marco shouted back, drawing two magazines from his tactical vest.
Outside, car doors slammed in rapid succession, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on wet gravel.
"Take this," Dante commanded, thrusting a small, sleek snub-nosed revolver into Norah’s trembling hands.
"Dante, I don't know how to shoot a gun!" she cried, staring at the cold steel with sheer panic.
"You point it at anyone who opens that door who isn't wearing my coat, and you pull the trigger until it clicks," he commanded fiercely.
He cupped the back of her neck, pulling her forehead against his for a fraction of a second.
"I will not let them touch you, Norah."
"Do you understand me?"
"Dante, please—"
"Look at me!" he demanded, his amber eyes burning with an incandescent, terrifying fire.
"You are coming out of this alive."
Before she could answer, Dante kicked open the driver’s side door and rolled out into the pouring rain.
Gunfire erupted instantly, lighting up the darkness with vicious strobes of yellow and orange muzzle flash.
Norah curled into a ball on the floor of the ruined limousine, clutching the small revolver against her chest with white knuckles.
Through the shattered window frame, she watched Dante move not like a corporate executive, but like an apex predator in his natural element.
He fired with surgical precision, dropping two advancing gunmen before they could even level their submachine guns.
Marco flanked the left side of the ruined vehicle, laying down suppressing fire that pinned the remaining attackers behind their armored trucks.
Dante advanced through the sheets of rain, his white shirt clinging to his muscular frame, entirely fearless in the face of death.
A gunman emerged from behind the second SUV, raising a tactical shotgun aimed directly at Marco’s exposed flank.
"Marco, left!" Norah screamed, her voice cutting through the gunfire without conscious thought.
Marco dove behind a concrete pillar just as a blast of buckshot shredded the metal where he had been standing.
Dante pivoted on his heel, firing three rapid rounds that dropped the shotgun-wielding attacker into the muddy gravel.
A high-caliber rifle cracked from the shadows of an overhead catwalk, the bullet tearing through the night air with a vicious whip-like snap.
Dante grunted, his body jolting violently as the round struck him high in the right shoulder.
"Dante!" Norah shrieked, horror clawing at her throat.
Despite the impact, Dante did not fall; he dropped to one knee, adjusted his aim upward, and squeezed the trigger twice.
A body tumbled from the rusted metal catwalk, crashing onto the hood of the SUV with a dull, hollow thud.
Sudden, suffocating silence descended over the loading dock, broken only by the hiss of steam and the pounding rain.
Marco moved through the shadows, systematically checking the downed men with cold, ruthless professional detachment.
"All clear, Boss," Marco called out, his breathing heavy and ragged.
"The backup security convoy will be here in two minutes."
Norah scrambled out of the ruined limousine, ignoring the broken glass that tore at the hem of her crimson silk dress.
She ran through the mud and rain toward Dante, who was leaning heavily against the rear bumper of an abandoned shipping container.
Blood was pumping rapidly between his fingers where he clutched his right shoulder, turning his white dress shirt into a vivid crimson canvas.
"Dante!" she cried, dropping to her knees beside him on the wet pavement.
He looked down at her through rain-soaked hair, his face pale beneath the grime of gunpowder, yet that infuriating smirk slowly returned to his lips.
"You see, princess?" he whispered, his voice strained and tight with pain.
May you like
"I told you I wouldn't let them scratch you."
Then his eyes rolled back, and his heavy frame collapsed forward into her trembling arms.
