Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

|

By noon the following day, Norah had transformed the private estate library into a high-security war room.

Spread across the antique walnut table were dozens of forensic spreadsheets, banking transaction logs, and corporate registries.

Her eyes burned from the glare of dual monitors, but a triumphant smile played across her exhausted lips.

Dante walked into the room without knocking, carrying a fresh pot of coffee and an aura of quiet authority.

"Tell me you have good news," he said, setting the tray down beside her chaotic mountain of papers.

"I don't have good news, Dante; I have catastrophic news for whoever betrayed you."

He pulled up a chair beside her, leaning in so close that his shoulder brushed against hers.

"Show me."

"The twenty-two million dollars didn't stay in Cyprus," she explained, tapping her pen against the glowing screen.

"It was routed through three shell entities in the Cayman Islands before landing in a private trust fund based in Geneva."

"Whose trust fund?"

"The primary beneficiary is listed as an offshore holdings group called Il Serpente."

Dante’s posture went rigid, his jaw clenching so hard that the muscle ticked beneath his skin.

"The Moretti syndicate."

"Worse than that," Norah continued, clicking to reveal a secondary set of domestic signatures.

"The internal transfer approvals were co-signed using an encrypted digital key that belongs to someone inside your inner circle."

"Who?" Dante’s voice was as cold as a winter grave.

"Salvatore Varga."

Silence descended upon the library, so thick and heavy it felt suffocating.

Salvatore was Dante’s underboss, a man who had served his father for thirty years and held Dante at his own baptism.

"Salvatore has been dining at my Sunday table since I was seven years old," Dante murmured, his voice deadly calm.

"He didn't just steal your money, Dante," Norah said softly, sensing the profound betrayal cutting through his armor.

"He is funneling your logistics data to the Morettis so they can seize your maritime shipping corridors at the Port of Newark."

"How are they planning to finalize the handover?"

"According to these calendar memos hidden inside the encrypted server, there is a private charity gala tonight at the Metropolitan Museum."

"The annual St. Jude Children's Foundation Gala," Dante realized instantly.

"Salvatore and Carmine Moretti are meeting in the VIP mezzanine at midnight to execute the digital transfer of the shipping rights."

Dante stood up, walking toward the grand bay window overlooking the grey, churning river.

"They expect me to be in Chicago resolving a labor dispute with the Teamsters."

"Then this is your opportunity to blindside them."

"We cannot simply walk into an elite high-society gala with twenty armed soldiers, Norah."

"The mayor, the police commissioner, and three district attorneys will be standing in that ballroom."

"Then how do you stop them?" she asked, leaning back against her chair.

Dante turned around, his amber eyes gleaming with a mixture of predatory focus and audacious charm.

"We walk in through the front entrance as honored patrons of the arts."

"We?" Norah blinked, her voice rising an octave.

"Salvatore knows my face, but he does not know you are holding the digital keys to expose his treason."

"I am an accountant, Dante, not a secret agent!"

"You are the woman who brought down an internal conspiracy in forty-eight hours with nothing but a laptop and sheer stubbornness."

Before she could formulate another protest, the library double doors swung open.

Rosa walked into the room, followed by two fashionable women carrying massive garment bags and velvet jewelry cases.

"What is all this?" Norah asked, staring at the sheer luxury arriving before her.

"You cannot infiltrate the most exclusive gala in Manhattan wearing an accounting firm's wool blazer," Dante said smoothy.

One of the stylists unzipped the first garment bag, revealing a breathtaking floor-length gown of deep, liquid crimson silk.

It possessed a dramatic neckline, delicate spaghetti straps, and a daring split that would showcase every curve of her figure.

"That dress costs more than my entire annual student loan payment," Norah whispered, unable to pull her gaze away.

"It costs whatever it takes to ensure nobody in that room looks at anyone else but you," Dante replied without a trace of hesitation.

He walked over, picking up a velvet box and opening it to reveal a cascading necklace of flawless teardrop diamonds.

"Get dressed, Norah," Dante murmured, his eyes holding hers in a vice-like grip.

"Tonight, the city learns what happens when someone tries to steal from the Russo family."
