Chapter 7 - A Dance with the Devil

|

The Grand Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was an ocean of black tuxedos, sparkling diamonds, and champagne flutes.

A twenty-piece string orchestra echoed off ancient Egyptian stone arches, filling the cavernous space with delicate Vivaldi melodies.

Heads turned in synchronized rhythm as Dante Russo stepped through the archway, radiating absolute, unapologetic power.

He looked devastatingly handsome in a custom midnight-black tuxedo, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned slightly at the collar.

Yet the gasps that rippled through the gathered elite were not directed at the mafia king; they were directed at the woman on his arm.

Norah looked breathtakingly stunning, the crimson silk dress clinging to her curves like a second skin.

Her auburn hair was swept into an intricate, elegant updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck and the dazzling diamond necklace.

She leaned close to his ear, her expression a masterclass in composed, high-society charm.

"If one more billionaire's wife glares at me, I am going to audit her husband's charitable foundation," she whispered.

A deep, genuine laugh rumbled in Dante’s chest as his hand rested firmly on the curve of her bare lower back.

"Let them look, princess; none of them possess your fire."

"Where is Salvatore?" she asked, scanning the glittering crowd beneath the massive marble arches.

"He is currently entertaining Carmine Moretti near the Temple of Dendur exhibition on the mezzanine."

"How do we get close enough to intercept the digital transaction?"

"We do what any wealthy, infatuated couple does at an elite Manhattan ball," Dante whispered, guiding her onto the dance floor.

"We dance."

Before Norah could argue, his strong arm slid around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad, muscular frame.

Her breath hitched in her throat as his fingers intertwined with hers, his touch searing through her skin like liquid heat.

The orchestra transitioned into a slow, haunting waltz that echoed off the ancient limestone pillars.

Dante moved with an effortless, predatory grace that commanded the entire floor, spinning her through the swirl of dancers.

"You dance remarkably well for a man who spends his days orchestrating racketeering," she murmured, gazing into his amber eyes.

"My mother insisted that a Sicilian gentleman must know how to lead a woman across a ballroom before he learns how to hold a weapon."

"Your mother sounded like an extraordinary woman."

"She would have adored you," he said softly, his voice dropping into a register that made her heart skip a frantic beat.

"Why?"

"Because you don't look at me with terror, and you don't look at me with greed."

"I look at you with caution, Mr. Russo."

"Caution is an excellent starting point for passion, Norah."

His words hung between them, thick with an undeniable, intoxicating electricity that made the rest of the crowded room fade into a blur.

As he spun her toward the perimeter of the ancient temple wing, Norah caught the sound of hushed, hurried voices above them.

Two men stood behind the massive glass balustrade of the mezzanine, their silhouettes framed by the dim exhibition lights.

One of them was Salvatore, his silver hair gleaming under the spotlights as he held a slim encrypted tablet computer.

Beside him stood Carmine Moretti, a bulky man with an arrogant snarl etched across his heavy features.

Norah listened intently, filtering out the violin melodies as the men spoke in a rapid, low-pitched dialect.

"U picciriddu nun sapi nenti," Salvatore whispered in harsh, gutter Sicilian.

"The boy knows nothing; the transfer will finalize at midnight on the dot, and Russo’s shipping empire is ours."

Norah’s eyes flashed with sudden, terrifying comprehension as Dante pulled her close to complete the turn.

"Dante," she whispered against his collarbone, her voice urgent and sharp.

"What did you hear?"

"Salvatore just confirmed the transfer code," she said, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"And he said the boy knows nothing."

Dante’s jaw tightened into cold, unyielding iron.

"Finn."

"They didn't just use Finn as a courier," Norah realized in horror.

"They are using my brother’s forged signature as the authorization stamp to transfer your shipping lines to Moretti."

"Which means when the authorities investigate the theft tomorrow morning, Finn will take the fall for treason against both families."

Dante’s amber eyes flared with lethal, murderous fury.

"Nobody uses an innocent boy to strike at my empire," Dante vowed, his voice a low, terrifying growl.

"And nobody endangers what belongs to me."
