Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

|

The rain had returned with a vengeance, drumming relentlessly against the reinforced tinted windows of the Maybach limousine.

Inside the plush leather interior, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense as the vehicle sped down the FDR Drive.

Marco sat in the front passenger seat, monitoring encrypted radio frequencies on a tactical handheld scanner.

Dante sat beside Norah, his tuxedo jacket discarded, the sleeves of his white dress shirt rolled up to his forearms.

He was typing furiously on a secure satellite laptop, cross-referencing the authorization codes Norah had memorized from the mezzanine.

"You are certain of the exact phrasing Salvatore used?" Dante asked without lifting his eyes from the glowing screen.

"I grew up hearing that exact dialect every time my uncle tried to hide money from my aunt," Norah stated firmly.

"He said 'u picciriddu nun sapi nenti'—the boy knows nothing."

"He used Finn’s biometric signature from the night they detained him in the basement of the gaming club," Marco added from the front.

"They duplicated his thumbprint onto a silicone matrix to bypass the maritime terminal security protocols."

Norah felt a wave of icy nausea wash over her chest as the full horror of the setup crystallized.

"Finn believed he was working off a five-thousand-dollar poker debt by running administrative envelopes across town."

"Your brother is an idiot, but he is not a traitor," Dante said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he closed the laptop lid.

"Which means his ledger with me is officially wiped clean."

Norah turned to look at him, her chest heaving beneath the crimson silk of her gown.

"Just like that?"

"I am a man of my word, Miss Gallagher."

"You promised me the traitor’s head, and you delivered Salvatore on a silver platter."

"Finn walks away unharmed, the debt is dissolved, and your twelve thousand dollars will be returned to your account tomorrow."

She should have felt an overwhelming sense of relief and liberation.

This was the exact outcome she had prayed for when she walked into his office three days ago with a canvas bag full of cash.

Yet instead of joy, a hollow ache opened deep inside her ribcage.

"And what happens to Salvatore?" she asked quietly.

Dante looked out into the rain-slicked night, his profile chiseled from cold, unforgiving marble.

"In our world, loyalty is the only currency that truly matters."

"When a man breaks that oath, he cannot be allowed to negotiate a severance package."

"You are going to kill him."

"I am going to ensure that nobody ever considers betraying the Russo name again."

"Does it ever stop, Dante?" she asked, reaching out instinctively to touch the sleeve of his shirt.

"The blood, the retaliation, the paranoia—does it ever leave you with anything resembling peace?"

Dante looked down at her hand resting against his arm, his expression softening with a profound, unspoken sorrow.

"Peace is an illusion sold to people who do not have an empire to defend, Norah."

"Then your empire is a golden cage."

"Perhaps," he whispered, leaning closer until his dark gaze consumed her entire world.

"But inside this cage, I have found the only woman who has ever dared to speak the truth to my face."

Before she could process the weight of his admission, Marco’s voice cut through the cabin like a razor blade.

"Boss! We have three black Suburbans closing fast from the rear exit ramp!"

Norah whipped her head around toward the rear window as blinding high beams illuminated the interior of the limousine.

"Moretti's crew," Dante muttered, his hand instantly reaching inside his coat for a custom black semi-automatic pistol.

"They realized Salvatore's digital transfer failed to execute."

A deafening roar shattered the night as the lead SUV rammed violently into their rear bumper.

The Maybach fishtailed across the wet asphalt, tires screaming in protest as metal ground against metal with terrifying force.

"Hold on to me!" Dante roared, throwing his massive arm around Norah’s waist and pulling her down toward the floorboards.

Before she could scream, a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the rear glass, raining deadly shards across the leather seats.
