Chapter 11 - The Raid on St. Jude's

|

The pristine white corridors of St. Jude Care Pavilion were deathly silent under the dim midnight nightlights.

In the shadows outside Room 214, a man dressed in sterile hospital scrubs stood near the medication cart, his hand resting inside his jacket pocket.

He was checking his wristwatch, waiting for the midnight signal to execute the hit.

He never heard the footsteps behind him.

A gloved hand clamped over his mouth like an iron vise while a combat blade pierced the base of his skull with surgical precision.

The hitman went limp instantly, dragged silently into an empty linen closet by two of Richard’s elite operators.

The door to Room 214 clicked open softly.

Emily slipped inside, her heart pounding against her ribs as she saw her mother sleeping peacefully beneath a pastel quilt.

Clara Carter looked frail, her gray hair haloed against the white pillow, the gentle hiss of her oxygen concentrator filling the room.

"Mom," Emily whispered, tears welling in her eyes as she reached out to touch the frail, warm hand.

Clara's eyelids fluttered open, her cloudy blue eyes widening in confusion.

"Emily? What are you doing here at this hour, sweetheart?"

"We have to move, Mom," Emily said softly, pulling back the covers.

"It's not safe here."

A shadow fell across the doorway, and Richard stepped into the room, his imposing silhouette framed by the corridor light.

Clara turned her head toward him, squinting through the gloom.

Her breath hitched in her throat.

"You..." Clara whispered, her trembling hand rising slightly from the bed.

"You're the boy from the alley."

Emily froze, looking between her mother and the towering mafia boss.

"Mom? You know him?"

Clara's eyes filled with ancient, bitter tears, but there was no hatred in them.

"David came home that night before he went back out," Clara said, her voice shaking with the memory.

"He told me he found Marcus Callahan's son pinned down by Moretti's butchers."

"I begged him not to get involved."

"I told him it wasn't his fight."

Clara reached out, her frail fingers brushing against Richard's sleeve as he stepped closer to the bedside.

"David told me that an innocent boy’s life was worth defending, no matter what last name he carried."

"He knew what Moretti was planning."

"He knew he wasn't coming home."

Richard bowed his head, his broad shoulders dropping under the crushing weight of her words.

For the first time in his adult life, Richard Callahan looked completely broken.

"I am sorry, Mrs. Carter," Richard whispered, his voice cracking.

"I am so sorry I couldn't save him."

Clara shook her head slowly, a gentle, sorrowful smile touching her frail lips.

"David didn't die for a criminal, Mr. Callahan."

"He died to give a lost boy a second chance to become a good man."

"Have you become that man, Richard?"

Richard looked up, his dark eyes locking onto Emily's tear-streaked face before turning back to her mother.

"I am trying, Mrs. Carter."

"Starting tonight, I am going to finish what your husband started."

Two female medical transport officers entered the room with a specialized wheelchair, moving Clara with swift, gentle care.

"Victor has an armored transport waiting at the private ambulance bay," Richard said, regaining his commanding composure.

"She will be at my family estate in thirty minutes, protected by thirty armed men."

Emily leaned down, kissing her mother’s forehead as they wheeled her toward the door.

"I love you, Mom. I'll see you soon."

"Be careful, Emily," Clara whispered, gripping her daughter's fingers one last time.

As the transport vanished down the corridor, Richard turned to Emily, checking the chamber of his sidearm with a metallic snap.

"The ledger is loaded onto the encrypted servers," Richard said, his voice dropping into pure ice.

"Julian Moretti is waiting at Navy Pier for a trade that isn't coming."

"What are we going to do?" Emily asked, the fear in her chest burning away into pure, cold resolve.

May you like

Richard looked down at her, his eyes blazing with an ancient, righteous fire.

"We are going to tear his kingdom down."
