Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Parking Garage

|
The winter wind sliced through the concrete pillars of the underground parking garage like an icy razor.
Emily wrapped her woolen coat tightly over her scrubs, her breath blooming into pale clouds under the flickering fluorescent tubes.
Her feet ached with every step after a brutal fourteen-hour shift.
All she wanted was to climb into her beat-up Honda Civic, drive to her tiny studio apartment, and sleep for twelve hours.
She couldn't stop thinking about the arrogant man with the dark, predatory eyes and the torso carved out of granite.
Richard Callahan.
Even among the hardened criminals who regularly drifted into the trauma ward, he had felt entirely different.
He had looked at her not with anger, but with an intensity that had made her own pulse race against her ribs.
She reached into her bag, her fingers finding her car keys.
A metallic click echoed behind a concrete pillar twenty feet to her left.
Emily froze.
The hair on the back of her neck stood straight up.
"Nurse Carter," a raspy voice drifted through the cold shadows.
Two men stepped out from behind a silver van, dressed in heavy dark parkas with hoods pulled low.
One of them held a suppressed pistol aimed directly at her chest.
"Don't scream, sweetheart, and maybe you get to keep your pretty face."
Panic seized Emily's throat, turning her voice to dust.
"I don't have any money," she managed to whisper, holding up her hands.
"We don't want your money," the armed man sneered, taking a slow step forward.
"We want to know what room Callahan is in, and who is guarding the back elevators."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Emily said, stepping back until her spine hit cold concrete.
"Wrong answer," the second man snarled, lunging forward to grab her hair.
He never touched her.
A deafening gunshot shattered the concrete garage, echoing like thunder.
The second man dropped to his knees with a choked gasp, clutching a shattered kneecap.
Emily gasped, stumbling sideways as boots pounded against the asphalt.
From the dark ramp of the garage, a towering figure strode into the pale yellow light.
Richard Callahan moved like a phantom, a heavy automatic weapon resting casually in his right hand.
His face was pale from blood loss, but his eyes burned with lethal precision.
Behind him, three men in tailored suits fanned out silently, cutting off every escape route.
"I believe the lady gave you an answer," Richard said, his voice deceptively smooth.
The first gunman turned his weapon toward Richard in pure panic.
Richard didn't even flinch.
He raised his arm and fired once.
The bullet caught the gunman in the shoulder, spinning him violently to the ground.
Emily pressed both hands against her mouth, trembling violently as the smell of gunpowder filled the freezing air.
Richard walked past the groaning men on the floor without sparing them a second glance.
He stopped right in front of her, his towering frame blocking out the cold wind.
"You're shaking," he said softly, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly timbre.
"You... you shot them," Emily stammered, staring at the crimson spreading across the concrete.
"They came here to torture you for information about me, Nurse Carter."
Richard reached down, his fingers brushing gently against her jawline to inspect her skin for scratches.
"You should have let hospital security handle it," she whispered, her voice shaking with adrenaline.
"Hospital security would have carried you out in a black bag."
He took her wrist in a grip that was surprisingly gentle, yet completely unbreakable.
"Your shift is over, Emily."
"Where are you taking me?"
May you like
Richard looked back into the darkness of the garage, his jaw tightening like iron.
"Somewhere they can't kill you for saving my life."
