Chapter 5 - The Gilded Cage

|
The iron gates of the Callahan estate swung open into a fortress hidden along the rocky shores of Lake Michigan.
Surrounded by towering stone walls and private security checkpoints, the massive modern mansion looked more like a citadel than a home.
Armed guards in tactical gear dipped their heads in silence as the black SUV pulled under the grand portico.
Richard stepped out first, offering Emily his hand.
She ignored it, stepping onto the wet gravel under her own power.
Her knees shook, but she refused to show weakness in front of the dozen men standing watch.
"Victor," Richard barked as the front doors opened.
The older consigliere stepped out, his face lined with relief that quickly transformed into solemnity when he saw Emily.
"Miss Carter," Victor said, bowing his head with genuine deference.
"It is an honor to finally meet David's daughter."
Emily didn't know how to respond to the reverent warmth in the old man's voice.
Inside, the estate was a masterpiece of polished marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and quiet, dangerous luxury.
Yet Emily could only focus on the dark crimson pool spreading across Richard's shirt.
"Where is your medical kit?" she asked abruptly, crossing her arms over her chest.
Richard paused on the second step of the sweeping marble staircase.
"I have a private doctor on retainer."
"Your private doctor is twenty minutes away, and you are going to bleed out on your expensive rugs if those sutures tear completely."
A faint, amused smirk touched the corner of Richard's mouth.
"She really doesn't back down, does she, Victor?"
"Not in the slightest, Richard," Victor murmured, handing Emily a large trauma kit from a side cabinet.
Emily followed Richard up the stairs into a cavernous master suite overlooking the stormy black waters of the lake.
He peeled off his blood-soaked shirt without a word, tossing it into a corner.
Emily caught her breath.
His body was an atlas of violence.
Faded knife scars ran across his ribs, bullet wounds marked his broad shoulders, and dark, intricate tattoos coiled down his arms.
And right across his lower abdomen, the neat stitches she had placed two hours ago were straining under torn, weeping flesh.
"Sit on the edge of the bed," Emily ordered, snapping on a pair of sterile latex gloves from the kit.
Richard sat down, watching her face with an unnerving, unblinking focus.
She cleaned the wound with antiseptic, her touch firm, precise, and deliberately professional.
Richard didn't flinch, even when the chemical stung the raw flesh.
"You should have let your men handle those shooters," she said quietly, threading a fresh curved needle.
"They wouldn't have reached you in time," Richard said.
"I am not your responsibility, Mr. Callahan."
"You became my responsibility the moment your father took a bullet for me twelve years ago."
Emily leaned in closer to place the first new stitch, her face only inches from his chest.
She could smell the clean cedar of his cologne beneath the sharp scent of iron and gunpowder.
His breathing was slow, deep, and steady against her forehead.
"You think keeping me in a gilded cage makes up for his death?" she whispered, tying the knot.
Richard raised his left hand, his calloused fingertips lightly brushing a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear.
Emily froze, her breath catching in her throat.
"I don't expect forgiveness from you, Emily."
May you like
"I only expect to keep you breathing."
"Because if Julian Moretti takes you from this world, my life won't be worth living anyway."
